In your opinion, what is the most popular WSM cartridge??

IMHO what killed the .325 was bullet selection. Great round though. There's nothing a 200gr TSX or Accubond moving @ 2900+fps won't kill

that's always been a puzzler to me too.....the best of the WSM's is the 7 and it's least popular.......crazy.

Pretty simple....Americans aren't big fans of the metric system and they have a long love affair with the .270. It's as simple as that.

Pretty soon some fuktard is going to chime in and tell us to "stock up on brass, the WSM's will be gone in a few years" Laugh2

The fuktards said that about the WSSM too...

I never said anything was wrong w the 06 but remember the model t seemed to do the trick also . Just say steps in the right direction don't have to be leaps and bounds just a little bit at a time is alright too .

Mind u husqvarna makin leaps and bounds in the wrong direction . So maybe cartridges r doing the same but to me they seem more efficiently design imo

In my view there is exactly zero a WSM will do on game within 400 yards tha a .30-06 won't do. And here is the funny part -I'd guess +++90% of hunters don't have the marksmanship to get it done at that distance anyways. Not only that, but the vast majority of game is killed at under 300 yards. I live and hunt if fairly open country, and while I do need to make the odd 300-350 yard shot, I recently averaged my last 10 big game animals and it worked out to something like 150 yards.

Having said that, I am warming up to the idea of a compact 7mm RSAUM...or maybe even a .300 RSAUM. :)

You could likely say that of every cartridge designed since the 30-06 but what fun would everyone shooting the same cartridge be? There'd be nothing to argue about on the internet. Shooting new cartridges is fun, even for us old guys and it keeps the industry vibrant...practicality really isn't the issue.

.277 versus .284.........the 270 Winchester had so many followers and then a magnum in their favorite caliber finally hit the shelves, prior to that it was pretty much the .30's and 7's that had belts and standard cases. It's pretty hard to sell a new magnum to guys who have been carrying 300's and 7mm rem mags for how many years prior to the release of the short mag offerings????

I am making the move to the .510 WSM..........google is your friend if you've never heard of it...........

I agree - I am adressing the comment about how "v.2" is better. IMO it is not "better". The analogy of a modern car vs a Model T somehow relates to a WSM vs a .30-06 is a huge stretch.

Like I said, I'm warming up to - of all things - the RSAUM. Not because a .30-06 can't do it, but just for fun.

Just what is wrong with either an '06 or a .303 Brit?
They will do everything, along with a host of other cartridges.
that does not mean that just because something has come out in the last 10 years or so tha it is better than something that has been around for a while.
" something someone designed to sell to someone who thinks they need it" is exactly what I was told by an industry rep many years ago.
Cat

They work well.

Hey cat, I believe I will be going up to Fort Mac for the Fish & Game conference, will you be there? Maybe we can sell each other some raffle tickets again.

Ya, some people do get caught up in the marketing hype. One of my favourites was that the WSMs somehow defied physics and produced considerably less recoil than their long action counterparts. I jumped on the WSM bandwagon early for no other reason than they were new and looked like a lot of fun to shoot....so far I have not been disappointed. I'm on my fourth....lol

that's always been a puzzler to me too.....the best of the WSM's is the 7 and it's least popular.......crazy.

Remember two important things about the 7 WSM:
  1. There was a huge pent up demand for new 270 cartridges (6.8 SPC and 270 WSM) and there are too many 7mm cartridges
  2. Winchester botched the introduction of the cartridge since it could be chambered in a 270 WSM (initial version of 7 WSM)
  3. A .277 130gr bullet at 3300fps will vaporize any game while a 7mm (.284) 140gr bullet at 3100fps will simply bounce off ;)

Finally, my next long range hunting rifle will either be a 280 Rem AI or a 7mm Remington SAUM.
In the meantime, I'll stick with the now proven and mainstream 270 WSM!

I just like messin' with the factory cases and wildcatting them- not to build a better mouse trap mind you, just because!!:>)
I make no bones about the fact that absolutely everything i have shot in the past 40 years , could have been done with any number of cartridges and/or rifles.
I just tend to hunt and shoot weird stuff at times!

Cat, you are greatly missed on AO. Ain't the same without your knowledgeable, measured responses. Have a merry Christmas, buddy!

In Aus , my opinion is the 300 WSM for being most popular. and Both the 270 & 325 tied for 2nd!!

downhere ppl sat, Whats a 7wsm!!!

cheers

Don't understand the big deal about short actions. The difference isn't that important to me, and I'd like to be comfy wit all action lengths.

Its more important to the guys that hike mountains every year than it is to most hunters. If i were hunting high altitudes, i would be looking to cut every ounce as well.

A lot of people didnt think any of the WSM calibers wouldnt be around in 10 years, and they still are, even though some are more popular then others.

So out of the .300 wsm 7mm wsm .325 wsm and .270 wsm which is the most popular, and why? Cause 3 of the 4 have long action siblings that are all outstanding and extremely popular.
The 300 WSM is and has been the most popular of all the WSM and WSSM up to July of 2013. The main reason is that the 300 delivers accuracy, efficiency and probably produces less throat erosion due to its lighter powder charge. The second most popular is the 270 WSM. A survey indicates that hunters wanted the 300 first but wanted to add something a little lighter to their collection, therefore the 270 was the popular pick over the 7mmWSM. The 7mmWSM was to close to performance to the 270 and 300WSM. Sales were quite dismal with the 7mmWSM where it was practically discontinued. Last is the 325WSM which performed bettered in sales over the 7mmWSM and the main reason is that ammunition companies manufactured various bullet loads plus it done well on the biggest game of North America, moose and elk.
As for the WSSM, well if you want one go look in the used gun section, there is nothing new on the new rack, only old stock.

The 300 WSM seems the most popular up north here, with our larger animals.

Personally, I could be convinced, at the right price, to get a .270 WSM, which does offer something over my current .270 win, whereas all the other WSM's offer nothing over their pre-existing bretheren.
