I just bought one of those cheapie Remington 700 SPS Tacticals in .308 from P&D. The young fella at the store put a Swarovski 3x10 on it and I went to the range with some old ammo I cooked up in 2005 for another rifle.

Back then all my shooting was with an old milsurp. I didn't bother sorting brass (that was for anal - retentive bench resters), and I probably didn't trim them consistently either. Powder was whatever I had on hand in those days too.

The new gun fired the first group into a .75" group. No fouling shots, no barrel break in, no voodoo - that thing went to work the second it hit the range! I took 9 rounds to sight it in but could have done it in 3. (I fired three shot groups as a formality).

Holy crap! This rifle was LESS than $700.00! I wonder what this thing will do when I start carefully handloading for it? Can't wait to shoot it offhand... I know she's fat and heavy - but this baby is going hunting next year!

That's great! I have always wanted to get a Remington myself being that they have been reliable and accurate right out of the box. Glad to hear you are happy with the new toy!

Isn't it gratifying to see such results?
It helps to douse the hotheads who are always dissing Remingtons.

I've said it before, and I'll repeat.
The chances of getting a good-shooting, out-of-the-box rifle
are always high if you buy a 700 from Big Green.

This is not saying there are no other production rifles that are not accurate.
I have others that are very accurate.

But the fact is, the 700 was, and continues to be, one of the best choices out there in production rifles.

Regards, Eagleye.

Hmpffff. I know the trigger is adjustable. Mine breaks crisp and clean like a thin glass rod...and I dunno what it is, but something about it just doesn't feel right. Theoretically they are set at 3.5 lbs. at the factory...but something about it puts me right off now that you mention it...

I will get used to it and adapt, but jeez louise...my old war horse mauser with the two stage trigger felt like a dream compared to the trigger on this one.

Oh well, I will pour a few pounds of Noslers and IMR down it's gullet and things should take care of themselves...

The chances of getting a great shooter with a new Remington are about as good as it gets. The SPSs seem to shoot just as well as the more expensive and better finished versions of the 700s. Sometimes it ticks me off a bit when the elcheapos beat or rival some of my rifles that cost many times more.
