What I've been doing is shooting from 10 yards with a repeating PCP air rifle. I just find dry firing boring since there is no real feedback.
The target is basically graph paper with 10 squares per inch. I use one square as an aiming point, but color different squares that I'm trying to hit to replicate scope dope.
Color squares anywhere on the page.... 5 squares up and 1 square over from the aiming dot, then dial the scope for it. This way it's not just dry firing, it's scope changes as well.
I made a practice cactus out of 4x4s and shoot from each branch.
This setup basically replicates all the motor skills of a PRS stage, but it's less expensive than even a 22LR and much more convenient because its right in the basement.
The key is to do it with a really good air rifle and aluminum stock. My recommendation is the Aeron stock with a (.177, 500 FPS) Weihrauch HW100, if you're interested.
Diamondback Tactical is the scope I recommend for this since it dials parallax to about 7.5 yards.
And one more thing... get the adjustable scope rings, or you may not get a zero that close and still have elevation available.
