Ended up pulling a trigger on a used infinity during covid. It was originally a standard pistol that was sent to ipsc alex for a open conversion. As far as i can tell, he did a scallop cut, cut for the racker, new barrel and comp, machining work up front to lighten the front end. All in all a ok pistol but far from perfect.

In the beginning my main goal was to clean up all the machining marks (there are many), and pvd the pistol as it was blued. Then about a few weeks after i got the pistol i decided to do something i would never have thought of. Laser engrave the entire gun to a design i would want. If im getting the ultimate gun why not have the ultimate design i want.

The plan now was to,

-clean up all the machining marks
-remove lettering on the side with the thumb rest (for some reason half the letters were machined off
-laser design and engrave a kaws theme
-newer grip
-redesign the red dot mount and new thumb rest
-clean up the internals (trigger was snagging on grip(to tight of a fit) and trigger was not smooth and crispy.
-pvd the frame, slide, grip, magwell, and internal parts

Here is the pistol when i got it.

notice it is a bit longer than a actual open gun built. the feeling is almost identical. while shooting the recoil and weight was not really noticeable.

will post builds for the other 2 guns later on.

first step was to remove all the bluing.

after 24 hours it removed everything but left a really hard waxy layer that even acetone could not remove. so it was off to bead blasting which did remove everything.

after blasting i tried doing some hand sanding before taking it to the buffer. the hardest part was removing the machining marks and also the lettering as half the infinity letters were machined off. ended up taking it to a belt sander to take the remaining letters off. then it was 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 2000 to finish.

Found it funny that nity was left. the red dot mount hides infi so no one would know unless you took the mount off haha.

New grip came in. cant be happier. just minor work needed to have it fit perfectly.

Took it to the laser machine today. ended up going through 4 revisions before deciding on this design. total time just for the barrel, slide, frame was 4 hours on the laser not including setup and positioning. All in all a great job. had all the depth and clarity i wanted. I combined 2 things i really loved. Kaws and Simpsons. its too bad the simpsons side will be covered up mostly with the mount and thumb rest but i have a design idea to help with that down the road.

polished and ready for some camo. how can i camo a gun thats getting pvd treatment? well by blasting :)

i as really surprised how the grey and green buffing combo worked. the green i thought would just shine up the metal but actually took out all the fine scratches.

taped up and ready for camo. i got the stencils from freedomstencils. i would not recommend them at all. the adheasive is avery and was very low tack. it would come up especially around the serrations or curved parts. a heatgun did not help. very bad for polished parts

went to sand blast today. turned out better than i thought. at first i was going to use vapor blasting to get the first layer on but since the vinyl tape was very low tac, i decided to just use bead blasting. we used #10 glass beads and psi set to 40 for the first pass. after i taped it up some more and set the pressure to 120. the 3 tone is actually noticeable.

late night laser etching and cleaning last night before sending it off to pvd.

the hardest part was actually cleaning. even soaking it in acetone and putting it in the oven to warm the polish up it was stuck on like a rock.

and off for pvd this morning

Haha only if I was a grandmaster. I have a local shop that does it but we have to buy out the whole oven. Usually not worth it unless we are doing min 4 whole guns

If just doing a barrel or a small part i think gunworx is your only bet. But last time I spoke to them they are still shut down. Give them a call.

got everything back from pvd. went with silver finish with a gold barrel. came out a little darker and more silvery if that even possible. even though it had a pvd finish it sucked the oil in right away.

IMG-6699.jpg

had to put everything to buffer again as it leaves a gripy surface but once you lightly buff it it is slippery as glass

the gun is fairly chuncky but good at the same time. the metal grip does add alot of weight compared to a sti plastic grip. it took about 200 rounds to break in before it became reliable again.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. Managed to get the new racker in. Plan on taking everything back down and doing the final polishing to make it look new. It’s too bad that once the mount is on it covers so much of the artwork. I guess only i will see the artwork when I’m taking it apart for cleaning haha.

Actually have a tanfoglio that got the scroll engraving done on laser. It’s amazing how much it looks like it been done by hand. The lasers nowadays can do a 3d image so it can mimic the curves and shading of a hand. Will post that up sometime next week.
