A friend of mine was given an original Colt Navy 1951 by his father. My friend doesn't know anything about guns and he was using it as a book rest thinking it was a replica. After finding out about it, he contacted the Colt archives department to order a letter for it but he was told that Colt only have records for Colt Navy 1851 pistols between serial #1 and 12 000.

The serial # of his pistol is 34 737 all matching numbers.

The pistol is stamped on the wooden grip with the letters U.C. upside down, the number 95 and what appears to be a C or a G.

The Cylinder is covered with the naval scene which is still vivid and not worn out.

The gun isn't pitted or rusted and is covered with a nice patina finish all over.

The action still works pretty good and timing seems to be fine.

He also has a holster made of black leather and in good condition.

Looking for any useful info on this pistol.

Pics to follow tonight as I'm at work at this time.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a good gun. Does it have a London barrel address? The UC is maybe Upper Canada, and its regiment #s, early made. 1853-55 depending on Address.
He could sell to me, and I'll throw in a new paper-weight.

Yes the barrel is marked with the London address. He's not looking to sell it but would like an accurate appraisal.

1851 colt

serial # indicates made late 1853 /early 54. from description i suggest min 2200- and up. bought a similar aged piece a while ago with no finish left and polished to boot for about 400- less

Awesome gun!!!!
An all matching Upper Canada colt in any condition starts at $2,500 and goes up from there.
Do a bit of searching on and you will find a better estimate based on what is available out there.
Thanks for posting pics.
Cheers

Thanks, I knew it was worth at least $2000 but I've also seen some in the $6000 range that weren't in mint condition. I don't know enough about antiques Colts to determine what makes such a difference in value.

Before he knew what he had, my friend almost sold it for $300. After he found out what he had in his possesion, he was offered $3000 US from a Texas guy we contacted (www.collectorsfirearms.com). Now he seems determined to keep it as a family heirloom but still would like to get an appraisal for insurance purpose.

Given the great condition of the gun and it's provenance it appears that it could command a high price. From the pictures it looks like the trigger guard and backstrap are steel "iron", if so it is not a common gun and this may increase the value even past what the Canadian connection adds to it.
Your friend has a real treasure there and it is good that he didn't sell it short.

He was using that for a book rest? THAT is AWESOME!!! One nice book rest my friend. IF he decides to see I hope he gets a good price as it looks in great condition from where I am sitting.
