Hello,

I'm not knowledgeable in the "black and green" shotgun world, my last "defense" shotgun being a Remington Model 10A that was cut down. So bear with me please!

I have it on good information that the best bang for my buck for a short, plain and reasonably cost effective shotgun is a Mossberg 500.

I am interested in picking one up sometime in the future and would like to know:

What should someone pay for one brand new these days? Used?
Can you buy the Mossberg 500 "Military" as a civilian? I understand it has a metal trigger guard and safety slide which is preferred. This model was brought to my attention by a friend who recently came home from the "Sandbox".

Can you get a Mossberg 500 with wood furniture as opposed to synthetic?

Is it common/possible to install choke tubes into the Mossberg 500?

Thanks for the info,
Drach

The Maverick 88 is made by Mossberg and seems to me it's pretty much the same as the 500. If you are going to go with a pistol grip stock, I like the button safety on the trigger guard of the Maverick compared to the one on top of the receiver on the 500. They're only around $200 new...so pretty good deal, IMO. If you want something nicer, then go for the 590A1.

The thing is, I am looking for an older Mossberg 500 in wood with a shorter barrel. Synthetic just does not feel as good in my hands, and I usually pack 50" long rifles into the bush from pre WWI, so the weight is not an issue. When did the stocks change to synthetic for that shotgun? I Google'd pictures of the Mossberg 500 and see many of them in wood furniture, so I just want to know what years I can ask for that are wooden.

Don't quote me on this but I believe they still make a 500 with wooden furniture. I guess it wouldn't have the shorter barrel, but you could always try and pick up a stock and forend on the EE

Well in terms of bang for your buck, you can get an 18.5" 5+1 Maverick 88 for $220 (prices vary, I got mine for an 210 with a pistol grip). Maverick 88 is a stripped down Mossberg 500. The only noticeable differences are, on a Mav 88, the safety location is on the trigger guard and the forend is a one piece, limiting aftermarket forend upgrades to "none". But as far as a basic, no nonsense, well built shotgun: it has it where it counts. I've dragged mine through the bush and the dirt, it still goes boom every time. The finish is good, unlike some other economy shotguns - the blueing is deep and resistant to damage. There is no cheap paint on my Maverick. The fit and finish are good. It cycles smoothly and it will eat any cheap ammo in 2 3/4" or 3" that I've fed it. The internals are decent, no sharp edges or burrs to speak of. For a little more than 200 bucks, you can't go wrong.

As for wood furniture, well I guess that's one area in which the Maverick is lacking. You can probably get a wood stock aftermarket, but the forend and action bars are one piece, so you'd have to swap out the whole thing. At that point you may as well get a Mossberg 500.

There were a few Mavericks that came with wood stocks, but they were rare...mine actually came with them when I bought it from Reliable many years ago. Some 500's also came with one piece synthetic forends...

You can usually find Mossberg 500's with wood in just about any gun shop, local or online, they are quite common.
