Inspire me with your hunting rifle in 308 Winchester !

Remington 760 Gamemaster ADL .308 carbine. 1956 vintage - mid-century when the big makers were at the top of their quality game. Skinner of Montana peep. Nicely figured walnut though the pic is too dark to tell. Slickest bush guns ever made, these 760's. Compact, light, glass-smooth action almost as fast as a semi-auto. Good accuracy from the free-floating barrel. Almost no felt recoil in this .308. You lose nothing in the bush with a .308 over a .30-06 except for too short a case to load the heaviest bullets (200 grainers and up) but you gain a bit in accuracy and lessened recoil. remington 760 .308.jpeg

Who's keeping track?

There sure are a lot of Tikka fans here. Tikka make an impressive rifle, as do other manufacturers.

As I stated earlier, I have the Ruger Scout, as iron sights for backup are a must have for me.

Does anyone else consider iron sights a must have for backup?
All but two of my rifles have iron sights. A must have in my battery.

The 308, for me they come then go, they come back again. When I don't have one I feel like I,m missing something. Currently it's an early Savage scout rifle. But it's for sale on consignment.
But I'm always looking for another 308. The Henry single shot is interesting.

This little package I put together last spring / summer. Everything you see in the picture was sourced from 3 different and awesome CGN’rs

Sako AII in 308
VX-3HD 2.5 -8 x 36
Optilock bases and low rings (might be medium)

In any event it fits me like a glove, carries easily and shoots the lights out. It was kind of a present to myself ………just because.

I had a short list of “dream rifles”, let’s call them and this rifle was on it. Also included in that list a Ruger m77RSI, a model 7 in walnut, and a Sako Forester preferably full stock.

I’ve had cracks at all of them over the years but, could never justify pulling the trigger at the particular times I found them. We are empty nesters now so I couldn’t pass this one up when it came up for sale. I believe it was manufactured right around when I graduated from high school. I’ve NEVER been more satisfied with a purchase. It’s an elegant, functional dream to carry.

There’s a Remington 760 or two on this thread. I have one of those in 3006 and really like it. I also still have my Father’s savage 99 in 300 savage that’s killed most of the deer I’ve ever harvested. Either of those in 308 could also serve as good examples …. Especially if you’re an East coaster like me.

I have only one rifle without open sights. One rifle without an optic so only open sights for that one!

My CZ 527 in 7.62x39 is an open sights only affair for me. My CZ 557 in 8x57 has QD mounts and I enjoy using irons on that one, especially with the NECG rear peep mounted.
My M48 Mauser (factory assembled sporter) is factory drilled and tapped for mounts, but I am quite proficient with it's irons and I will probably never mount a scope on it. Same goes for any SKS! The rest of my rifles have back-up irons, except my tang Ruger and Tikka T1x.

I have a Remington 760 carbine in 308 Winchester with the 18.5 inch carbine barrel and the matching 22 inch rifle barrel. It has had a trigger job and with 165 Sierra HP handloads it will shoot comparable groups to a good bolt action. There are more than a few 760/7600's that are VERY accurate, mostly I think to the free floating barrel.

.308 has never been a top hunting choice for me but that certainly isn’t because its not effective. I just prefer either smaller or bigger I suppose. I shoot lots of .308 at the range in FTR.
One .308 that I would grab would be an old Brno 601 with the rear bridge mounted, pop up peep. Shorten the barrel to 21”, slim the stock some and it would be a great truck, boat, take anywhere rifle. A good synthetic stock would be even better for what I would use it for, if Wildcat would make me one.

I have a Browning BAR hog stalker, they only came in 308 and they are out of production

Its a good looking gun with a plastic cammo stock and barrel

Its a good blind gun but way to heavy to carry around in a spot and stalk situation

I remember buying my tikka t3 tactical back in 2006. I probably have over 3000 rounds fired and it’ll do under 1 MOA all day. Even took it hunting and it brought me about half a dozen bucks over the years. I’m really happy with mine.
