I posted this in the general firearms discussion section but i got no bites. I am seriously thinking of buying a Norinco 1887 clone that has a 28 inch barrel but unfortunately was made with a modified choke barrel. I am wanting to have a gun smith install choke tubes in this shotgun so i can have it be full choke. Is this something i should be doing or will the Chinese shotgun blow up in my face... I have heard a lot of negative stuff about them. But i really want an 1887 clone added to my rotation. I have the money in hand. The only thing stopping me is that the barrel is not full choke. I shoot crows and pidgins as well as hunt upland game. I rarely ever have a need to shoot steel shot and if i did i would be using my benelli. Thanks in advance

The modified choke will work just fine for crows and pigeons and can even be a bit tight for upland birds... you don't need a full choke with modern shot shells with plastic wads... they pattern tighter...

Maybe i will give it a try. I am use to using full and extra full tubes in my BPS, SBE2 and a 1972 wingmaster that is fixed full that oddly measures the same as my extra full inventor tube. I think i will go pick it up tomorrow and give it a go tomorrow afternoon.

As an aside, if you bring vernier callipers, measure the outer diameter of the barrel at the point you would want the barrel to be after you have it "gunsmithed". You will need a minimum of .840" OD for a 12gauge if you want Briley chokes, which are pretty thin. If you want Remchokes, .890" is the normal required outer diameter.

If you are at .840" or under, it's unlikely you will be able to fit choke tubes to the gun.

Closure to the situation. I got talked out of the Norinco by the gun smith that i wanted to install the tubes for me. He told me that he worked on them before (not choke tubes but smoothing out etc and the metal is softer then he would like. His exact quote was "I wouldn't buy it for that kind of money. So there we are.
