Interest in 100 yard .22LR challenge?

One thing I want argue is that subtraction factor doesn’t really make any difference though.
I do understand the intention of group size minus SF is to get the true size from the centres of the two farthest holes.
But if everybody is using the same SF in this case .22, it doesn’t matter anymore.
At the end no matter how you calculating the scores, either total or average, it’s going to be a linear function.
So subtracting a constant doesn’t really matter

Not all .22 has the same specs. A few people that parkate in these challenges are true hardcore target shooters, where a hair makes a difference. You don't need to measure like that, only if you want to be technical. As it's a challenge of yourself.

I did a less informal challenge last year with more lax rules.

I know what issues I had last time. So I'm hoping to improve and see a sub 2"..

that's the rule, everyone subtracts .22. I guess you didn't read the rules

Once you have the rifle, ammo becomes everything. I was having fun testing out different makes and brands but then nothing came in this year at all. I have I think one box with about 40 rounds remaining that my rifle will consistently put shots inside a 2 to 2.5" circle at 100 metres. If I'm having a good day.

There still is a fair amount of quality ammo designed for 50 metres on the shelves but that has become a lesser challenge, lol.

From last year's rules, the subraction factor -- that is, how much to subtract from the outside-to-outside group dimensions -- is .22".

And so that everyone is clear, it's worth reminding everyone, especially newer shooters, that outside measurements are made to include the grey smudge left by the bullet as it passes through the paper.

Last year I chose to use .21" as my subtraction factor, but shooters can use .22 or something less if they prefer for their own reasons.

In case anyone is wondering why a smaller figure may be used, in practice the actual hole left by a .22LR bullet in paper is never as large as the diameter of the bullet itself. The nature of paper targets makes the bullet hole somewhat smaller, depending on the paper itself, and sometimes by the bullet (for example, Eley bullets often punch a "cleaner" hole than Lapua or SK).

Keep in mind this challenge is primarily an opportunity to see what you can do and how your results compare to those of others in conditions that are reasonably similar for everyone participating. If you can show improvement as you continue to shoot, so much the better. Improvement over his or her previous results should be the goal of every shooter.

A note of interest for anyone wondering about actual bullet hole size.

In the photo on the left, a .22LR bullet hole is shown between calipers set at .220". The actual dimensions of this hole, including the grey smudge, is shown on the image to the right.

Of course, the subtraction factor remains at .22". It is clear and simple, and understood by all. It is also the same subtraction factor used on the 1/2" challenge here on the Rimfire Forum of CGN.

Yup, I'm already shooting better than I did last year and today I shot a 1.8" group. Which last year my best was 2.1"

I'll do it too. Is there an updated link for the targets? Or can we just use whatever and shoot 3 groups on the same sheet?

If you can't find the target via the links posted in the original instructions (see the links at the bottom of post #1), I'll be happy to send anyone a pdf of the target.

For anyone who can't get the target printed, I can mail some to their mailing address. Send me a PM with your mailing information.

Targets will be mailed beginning next week.

I'm game. As soon as my Covid infection clears up and I test neg, I'll head to my range and give this a try. Thanks Grauhanen for starting this up again. BTW, is there any rule that prohibits adding a colored dot to the center of the target to improve the visibility of the aiming point? My scope is a 3-12X40 Athlon Talos and I'm afraid with my aging cataract eyes I won't be able to clearly see this target.

You could also use a bingo dabber.

The challenge will go up on Monday. The complete rules will be appended from last year's challenge.

For those new to the challenge, the basic idea is to shoot three ten-shot groups at 100 yards on the required target. The three group sizes are included, as well as the three group average. Everyone uses the same target, but every shooter is free to use whatever .22LR firearm they wish, with any scope. Participants are encouraged to post improvements in their results.

I can email a pdf of the required target for anyone looking for a copy to print on 65 lb cardstock. Please PM me your email address.

For anyone who can't get targets printed, I will be happy to mail free copies of the required target on 65 lb cardstock. Those interested in getting free targets to use in this challenge, please PM me your mailing information.

why not just upload the target to google drive or something so we aren't all hounding you for a file?

As horseman2 observes, and as has been noted elsewhere in this thread, there is a link that will take people to the target pdf. That's how it became available last year when this challenge was initially presented. Mel (horseman2) has kindly reposted a link to the target in post #37 above.

If it makes it easier to ask for a pdf of the target, I'll be happy to send it. I won't mind if it helps get more shooters involved. That's also the reason why I'm offering free targets printed on 65 lb cardstock mailed to shooters who can't otherwise get them. PM me for the free targets.

Free targets are still available to be mailed those who wish to try the 100 yard .22LR challenge. Here is the challenge https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2297200-100-Yard-22LR-Challenge

For all those who had interest last year but found getting the targets a problem, please PM me with your mailing address and I will be pleased to send you targets on 65 lb cardstock. If you can print your own targets, I can send you a pdf of the required target.

There are a lot of shooters with PRS rigs who can easily shoot at 100 yards -- for practice if nothing else.

Readers would like to see how those with Vudoo or RimX or Bergara or Tikka or CZ .22LR rifles can perform at 100 yards. Every shooter, regardless whether he has a "fancy" rifle or not, is welcome to try to get their best three ten-shot groups at 100.
