Interesting take on response time. (Bear/human defence)

Each person has there own comfort sone myself I'm quite comfortable being and working around bear I still pack a rifle but it's not out of fear

Thanks for sharing Carverk.

I have never been allowed to carry a gun while working in bear laden places anyways...

Prayer may work but i was cutting a caribou with two hunters a black bear came to charge us downhill and the 300 savage was a better medecine than praying ....

The old timers were pretty practical, I'd bet the prayer wasn't meant to be silent.

Pretty normal occurrence in much of the northern half of the country during the course of work. It's a rare day in spring not to be close to a bear at some point, of one of the two species locally. 99.999% of the time they just want to do their thing, treat them like a dog you don't know, but nothing to fear. You face a higher hazard statistically from the humans you meet in the bush.

I missed Ardents comments as I read through here..... The dog comment rings true....

I certainly don't have the bear experience of the BC / Alberta crowd, but having hunted for blackies for 25 years I have encountered many both while hunting and otherwise..... Only once did I have a "scare".... And further to Bruce's point, it wasn't while hunting.... It was while bringing my garbage to the burn barrel at camp (take that Justin Trudeau).....

That being said, and this happened just this year, I was hunting whitetail and had hiked in to the woods and was about ten miles from the nearest house, and more from the next and so on.... As i was doing some spot and stalk out of nowhere appeared a large bull mastiff ..... I was more afraid of that dog then I have been of any bear I had encountered....

Sum jobs it's mandatory to pack a rifle in northern BC
I'm always the guy that works with the city guys most time packing a rifle or shotgun is more about making them feel comfortable so thay can do there jod

Most companies I've worked for (NBC or otherwise) would rather you be eaten than accidentally shoot anyone; insurance policy reigns supreme.

The only time I ever got in trundle for packing a rifle was working for VIH helicopters I never like working for those guys much anyways haahaa

I always work with others and usually older FN guys; they know the woods well and are not afraid of bears.

I have seen a cougar in the lower mainland but never a bear while working with others in the bush.

Never had to deal with cougar that makes me a bit nervous I would think

After living in Canmore/Banff/Hinton for a while if you're dealing with a cougar it's usually on your back, killing you.

My buddy did see one slink by when he was in a treestand.....said he was beautiful.

^ funny I lived in Canmore too. A coworker of mine from the Phillipines saw a cougar at night between BP's and Wapiti.

He made me take him along next time I was going into town on a bullet run so he could grab a "jungle knife"

Something like 7-8 years ago a jogger was attacked (killed?) by a cougar in town iirc

I was charged by a medium sized black bear back in the 80's....the charge started from around 30 yards distance and I had the gun off safety and ready. Until it happens and you see first hand how quickly they can cover 30 yards its really hard to believe.

I got off 2 quick shots from a semi auto 308 using an occluded sight....the second shot stopped the bear probably no further than 3 feet from the end of the gun barrel.

Its truly amazing how quick they are at short distance....honestly if I had been hunting with a bolt action rifle when this happened there is no way I would have got the second shot.

Yup, that happened

Yup.....

La-dee-da....oh god...I'm dead.

One of my ex-girlfriends thought noise cancelling earbuds where a good idea on the mountain trails.

She's not my girlfriend anymore.

So, since we diverged down the 'Princess Bride' trail, would you guys hate me if I told you I have a framed poster from the movie, signed by all of the cast members (plus Reiner) in my living room??

BTW. This is an EXCELLENT thread thus far. Not a lot of hyperbole and nonsense. It's been informative and I've learned from it.
Thanks.
