So I went to Phoenix range in Edmonton this evening (Friday) to shoot my pistols and try out a few things. Mostly technique at different distances. After my warm-up and then precision rounds, I took some time to reload a few mags for each pistol; a Glock 17 and a Shadowline.

So I got to the second mag, and to my left I saw an incredible flash and heard an enormous boom! I put down what I was doing and backed out of the stall. I really thought someone's gun blew up. Then as I backed up far enough, I saw that it was someone shooting a .50 cal Desert Eagle. He was taking instruction from an RSO and only shooting one round at a time.

Incredible! I've never seen one of these fired. I really couldn't do any more in my stall right next to this, until they were finished. It was that loud and the flash was that intense. Then, the person's girlfriend or wife had a try. By this time, everyone in the range stopped shooting and came over to watch.

I must say, that is one hand cannon! Maybe I'll try one some day...

I remember the first time I was shooting next to a Desert Eagle, I had doubled up on ear pro so the thud sounded similar to a shotgun or rifle but then I began noticing each thud was felt in my teeth! I talked to the owner shortly after and he said it was always a calculated decision to bring out his DE, literally a calculated decision, each trigger pull was about $1.50 down range. Don't think I'll ever own one, though.

I will bet that would've been a nasty bang. Curious enough to want to try that once.

I've had the same thing happen while I was plinking away with my .22 Webley, trying to hone the precision side of pistol shooting. A guy was blasting away with his 44 magnum in the stall next to me. Every one of his shots, and the concussion wave was moving my head just enough. I had to time my shots around that thing.

I'm sure that Desert Eagle must have been a sight.

Reminds me of the day my Dad's good friend Werner took me out to the range for the 1st time to try out the shotgun he was going to sell me.
It was my first gun, a 59 savage semi with beautiful scroll work of some ducks.
There was a guy firing at the 50 yard range(It wasn't much of a range, more of a big gravel pit) and it was getting close to dusk.
He was a big fellow, and when he shot, the recoil was sending his hands pretty much straight over head, and there was in my 16
year old minds eye a 2-3' flame coming from the muzzle.
Never forget that day.

My first time shooting a gun was in NC , in the states. Tried the 9mm , fun it was ,,,,,,got brave, tried the DE 50 cal. DAMN !! that was a BLAST , literally.
And that folks is how it all started. Been hooked ever since.

The very first handgun I fired was a desert eagle in .50AE, that a friend of mine introduced me to... I'm glad i recorded it - now i watch the video every couple months reminding myself why i need to get one

DE's require hands like a monkey to shoot. Biggest friggin' thing I've ever shot. Only a .44 Mag, but actually quite pleasant to shoot even though I was almost holding the thing sideways. Finger came nowhere near the trigger. And the frame had been reduced in size by Cylinder and Slide.

I've shot that S&W 500 at phoenix... man... the RO was this old guy in a wheelchair. explained proper pistol grip so we wouldn't cut our thumbs open when the slide came back... saw me doing well with the 9mm so said I should give the 500 a try that my friend wanted to shoot. Felt like I was hanging on to a rifle not a pistol... He made sure I was leaned well forward then... BOOOOM! Felt like I had blown my fingers off. put the revolver down and did a quick digit check... Never shooting that again haha

Yeah, I did the .45/70 BFR, the .50AE Desert Eagle and the .500S&W Mag... the 500 my wife and father could feel in their feet through the floor from about 10' away... I went shopping for a .500 online that night.

My 500 is louder. And my 460 is even louder

I can shoot about 50-60 rounds of .50ae comfortably before I start getting tired and getting to the point where I will flinch.
500S&W I can shoot 10 rounds accurately before my hands are starting to fatigue.... But the .500 puts the .50ae to shame.

I tried them all but all those are nothing in comparison to DanWesson .357 Magnum Maximum. Best BANG for the buck.
Blast radius is impressive and if you are standing close enough you receive instant hair cut.
Love seeing people faces expressions when that thing goes off.

When I decide it's "big gun day" down at the range, I pack up all my big-boy toys and head on down.

Warm up is a Dan Wesson in 44 Mag.
Beautiful, ###y revolver. Clean, accurate and a joy to shoot. It was the first of my large bore pistols.

Moving up the food chain is my Desert Eagle in 44 Mag/50AE.
A real hoot to shoot. The 44 Mag barrel is great for when I shoot indoors (no 50AE allowed:() and the 50AE gets tons of attention on the outdoor firing line.
I disagree with sunray about the monkey hands requirement. I have medium hands and routinely rattle off many mags of ammo with no problems. Technique wins with this one.

A step to the left of the DE is my BFR in 50AE.
I love the revolver, but the way it rotates during recoil.....! It has a tendency to chew up my palms quickly. A shooting glove got the palm ripped out of it in short order as well.
Maybe a grip change or barrel porting will help.

Then the Smiths come out to play.
Rolling out first is the 460V.
What else can I say that hasn't already been said. A blast to shoot. The flame....the concussion.... :dancingbanana: Oooohhhhhbaby!!!!!!

And then there is the 500 Mag.
THE monster on the line. Flame....check. Blast....check. Jaw dropping ability to stop activity on the line....check. Wallet cries every time I pull the trigger....double check :p

I'd actually fear shooting either of these last two indoors. From under a hut roof is bad enough. Can't imagine in a concrete tunnel.

You say that now but never say never

I shoot in an indoor "concrete tunnel" with 10 lanes.
I stopped shooting my 460V there. While it's not too bad for the shooter I sense the shock wave and boom starts to annoy the other patrons after about 20rnds:rolleyes:
