Introducing New Shooters to the Games

Our clubs trap segment is very active and host weekly "open trap shoot" nights. Anyone can come and shoot , they get club owned guns and instruction. Little-if any- snobbery is tolerated at any of our trap shoots, open, club or contests.

New shooters or anyone that asks get pointers, anyone that doesn't want help doesn't get it. We have some top notch trap shooters, especially some juniors, but there is little tolerance for prima donas. Our best shooters happen to be farmer and logger families and a few carpenters and plumbers thrown in. Keep it fun, help out the new guys and gals and it will work. Nothing is worse than people that take themselves too seriously.

I don't shoot much trap these days, but in our club, if you want fun- trap shooting is where it's found. Pure comedy!:)

I envy your situation.

We do have one of the nicer facilities in the Maritimes, unfortunately we seem to have a hard time getting people out to use it. We've had a decent turnout at most of our shoots this year, however locally most people aren't aware we exist, as Secretary my biggest challenge the past couple of years has been to figure out the balance between maintaining what we do, promoting the club to the public and building towards it's future. Our last shoot had 45 people at it, however the Beretta Atlantic Sporting Clays Challenge I attended last saturday at the Fredericton Trap & Skeet had 140 some shooters, a low turnout for that shoot. The trend is definitely moving towards sporting clays and away from skeet & trap. I understand it, our current goal is to add Sporting Clays to the mix but to do so without offending the current membership and keeping operating labour requirements to a minimum.

We have people driving over an hour from Edmonton to shoot skeet, because there are no skeet fields in use in the Edmonton area. That being said, most of our shooters are local retired people. We typically have from 3-4 shooters when the weather is bad, to 20 at most on a nice Sunday. We often have no trap shooters at all, and at most 3-4. At my old range, we typically had 6-12 skeet shooters and 8-20 trap shooters, with some people shooting both. On a really busy day, we have had as many as 40 shooters show up, but that was rare. The other club that I belong to only has trap for now, and we typically get 8 to 12 shooters. The executive is considering the construction of a skeet field, but that decision has yet to be made. That range has a could of spring operated manual throwers that see a lot of use, as many people prefer to use them than shoot trap.

A typical nice Sunday afternoon would have between a dozen to 2 dozen shooters, shooting both skeet and trap, any Sunday year round. Friday afternoon would be about a dozen, Monday evenings 1/2 dozen is the norm. The volume on Sundays in the summer will vary depending on what shoot is scheduled where in the Maritimes, every weekend after May 1st their is a scheduled shoot somewhere in the Maritimes.
