Hi there my name is Tyler and i am 16. i am currently invloved in target shooting with hanguns that fall in to catagory of 9MM and above and was interested in becomming a member of IPSC. I was wondering if i even meet the age requirment and was also wondering what other requirments there are.

Thanks for looking.

Ipsc age

Sure you do. there is no minimum age for IPSC. You need to pass the black badge course like everyone else. This demonstrates that you have safe gun handling skills. Necessary whether you 16 or 100.

There is no "minimum age". Anyone under the age of 18 is considered to be a Junior.

I have seen shooters start at 12 or so.

My two kids shoot with me at age 14 and 17..........so actually you are starting a bit late!! LOL!

What you do need is a sponsor ( from an Ontario perspective) who is over 18 and a members of IPSC in good standing.

Which province are you located in?

Tyler, welcome to IPSC.
You are good to go like what Storm said.
I introduced my son into IPSC when he was 14-years old. I was his sponsor/guardian while shooting IPSC matches.
The draw back for me, my 14-year old son shoots better than I do.....:redface: $^$#%@^%$#@^%*$!!!!!

Good luck. See you around at the match.:)

I wish I would have gotten into IPSC at 16...

Some of the best shooters in the IPSC scene are in their late teens and early 20's. Go for it...

(And you are considered a "junior" until age 21 in IPSC is what Storm really meant ;) )

Me too, I only found out about IPSC at age 34, and only by accident while surfing the net, I always thought hunting was the only way I could enjoy shootin. There should be more adveratising somehow cause Iam sure Iam not the only one. Check out the IPSC web site. Good luck.:50cal:

You know I had 21 entered.............

But then I checked the IPSC Ontario Website.........it says 18

I was pretty sure that 21 was the number. It is relatively important as "trinity" turns 18 this June.

RHall.......you are right about the advertizing..... However it is very hard to do. Have you ever tried to get media coverage for a match? I have.........it is almost impossible! But I keep banging my head against the wall. So far the best method I have found is to take people to the range and then show them videos!! At the EESA Open House weekend I have a laptop playing all the time (this year I am putting it on an overhead) showing vids. It always gets people talking>

If I recall correctly... IPSC Ontario ammended the age to 21 in the past year to align themselves with the IPSC World Catagory definition of a Junior.

Found it... Check the January 18th, 2007 Minutes fo Meeting, IPSC Ontario Board of Directors

Expansion of the Juniors Program
Background: Existing program ends at 18 years of age.
Issues / Proposals: This is just clean up…we already voted on this but let’s do it again for the official record. So…the proposal is to extend the Juniors program to the age of 21 (to match the age at which members are recognised as juniors in IPSC competition)
Summary of Jan 18th Meeting: Motion was passed

It is age 21 Storm according to the new ON IPSC junior program policy.. IIRC implemented on 2007. I had to confirm that from the ON IPSC admin (Bud) before I renewed our membership for 2008 because my son had turned 18 on November 2007. I was not sure if we have to pay for his 2008 membership had it been 18 is the max age for IPSC ON juior members.

Just to correct our newest instructor trainee (sorry storm)the Jr. program starts at 12 and are still considered a Jr at 21 under our futures in Ont.

Hey DEP;

welcome to the IPSC world! as everyone has stated, pass the blackbadge and your golden. My son took his BB at 11 and 6 weeks later at 12 completed his first shoot, We have not looked back since. Awsome sport, great people.
if you are in the TO area, STORM is a great guy to get to know as he has 2 jr's of his own, if you are in the east look us up. My son has an interesting website you might want to check out. It is all about juniors in the sport.
www.junioripscshooting.piczo.com

If you are interested in a juniors perspective let me know, I'll give you

my son is 14 going on 15,...he recieved his BB certification last June. He has shot about 4 matches...so he knows that it is not a video game....he has to actually aim....His mag changes and draw are good...but his patience is low. He is still interested, and hopes to compete more during the summer.

Ah but I was going by the info on the web site which was in error at the time with regard to the upper limit.....which has now been corrected.

The lower limit..........well you are in error there I do believe my good man.

The specifications indicate that the Junior must have taken the CSSA Handgun course and passed it. It does not suggest a minimum age.

As a CSSA instructor I can tell you that there is no minimum age for that course.

Witness Curtdad above discussing his 11 year old taking his BB course.

Now the JUNIOR PAL course is limited to age 12 and many people use this as a starting point but there is no requirement for that to be taken prior to a BB course.

I guess us new trainiees can teach more than just the students.!!;)

awome guys thanks for the info. My dad used to shoot ipsc and im trying to get him back into it. it looks like a good challenge and a lot of fun.

I'm sure you know this, but at 16 you can't legally own or use restricted firearms of any kind by yourself. So you'll have to get whoever currently owns the pistol you're using to go too. Otherwise, it's do the "Black Badge" course and go shooting, but only "under the direct and immediate supervision of a licensed adult". Same as it is for target shooting.
