We are starting this thread to allow people to ask questions about IPSC competition shooting. You can ask questions about gear, getting started, training etc. Let's hear your questions!

Shadow 2 or P320 X5 Legion?

They are both excellent. I would suggest trying to see if someone at your local range can let you try them both and see which one fits your hand better. In Canada, it would be easier to get parts for the CZ than the Sig.

Which gears most popular for IPSC? How many mag pouches needed?

We sell and use Double Alpha gear and it is excellent. IPSC has a maximum 32 round field course limit so that is 4 magazines without allowing 1 to barney (add the 11th round into the chamber at the start). You also want to have at least one extra mag in case you have a malfunction. I would recommened a minimum of 5 with the ideal being six pouches and magazines.

If you need specific gear recommendations for a particular division, please let me know and I will assist.

4 or 5 mag pouches with good magazines should suffice, plus a couple of external magnets so that on a table start you can grab a couple of magazines and slap them on as you run. Use a crappy magazine (often the one that came with the gun) as a Barney, bring it up to the line on a magnet, then at the line it goes in the gun, cycle, set safety/decock, drop that mag, and insert one of the good ones and holster. That possibly could have even been on a magnet too, come and think of it, so four reloads in pouches to use on the clock could suffice.

Anyone old enough to remember good old Barney Fife?

Don't weigh yourself down with all your mag pouches full on a stage that has a lot more running than round count.

Any holster and mag pouches for HK VP9 Match optic ready?

DAA notes that for the VP9 you must mold their Kydex holster (PDR Pro 2) to fit. With that being said, you would be better off with the Alpha X race holster which would not require modification. That particual insert block is special order but we order from DAA frequently so it would likely be less than a month for us to receive.

This is the link to the Alpha X Holster: https://fasttoys.net/ca/DAA-Alpha-X-Holster/

Mag pouches are universal for double stack guns and the DAA pouches come with a variety of spacers to accomodate most mags. The two most popular are:

Racer Magazine Pouch: https://fasttoys.net/ca/Double-Alpha-Canada-Racer-Magazine-Pouch/

XiP Magazine Pouch: https://fasttoys.net/ca/Alpha-XiP-Pouch/

The XiP is their latest product and has a little more adjustability than the Racer. It's not a huge difference but the XiP can let you position the pouch a tiny bit better ergonomically.

Any recomendations for training videos/books?

I'm going to say Ben Stoeger does a pretty decent job.

Hwansik Kim is also solid, his approach is to dissect the sport into individual pieces and train for them. You don't hear Jerry Miculek or Taran Tactical or any of the old timers talks about shooting sport that way.

But like many top shooters or top athlete, what works for them doesn't automatically translate to us mere mortals. It also depends on where do you see yourself in your shooting career, still learning, intermediate or you can frequently outshoot open gun with a production.

What I find I learn the most is re-plan and re-shoot the stage in my head right after I shot it. If you can have a buddy filming you, then watch that footage again with the stage map. Learn from your own mistakes, find area where you can find more time to shave off.

Any recomendations for training videos/books?

As mentioned, Ben Stoeger has a good book.

For videos: there are a number from Saul Kirsch from Double Alpha that are very good as well as some from Max Michel

We also post videos on training in our Youtube channel and plan to post more as well as gear review videos. Subscribe and you can keep up to date there. You can also follow our Facebook group.

I would also highly recommend you get a laser training set up. They take dryfire to a whole new level by confirming your trigger pull and accuracy. We sell reactive targets that light up when hit that confirm your hits, can time your shots and even make training fun.

There are also tools like the Mantis X10 that we sell that will use an accelerometer mounted to your gun combined with an app on your phone and will gauge your trigger pull, grip, recoil control and more.

With the high cost of ammo these days, dry fire and laser training can improve your shooting skills from the comfort of your home.

A customer asked about bullets out mag pouches and what the advantages were:

Answer:

Bullets out mag pouches (which DAA Racer, Xip and the magnetic bullets out pouches allow) are an advantage because they allow the pouches to be put closer together on the belt which means you don't have to reach as far back on your belt for mag changes. The less far you have to reach, the more ergonomic the angle is and the quicker and more reliable your reloads will be. I would suggest that anyone starting out go with bullets out orientation so they do not have to relearn anything. For people that are you used to the regular bullets to the side orientation, you can still learn bullets out and take advantage of that orientation but it will take some dryfire practice to get used to it.
