IPSC getting started

Personal experience

My personal experience is that I shot bullseye for about a year, as per the rule of thumb, before taking my Black badge course in January of this year. However, at the R.A Gun Club, where I have my membership, it is now the rule that a candidate for the Black badge course be evaluated for basic competency (safe manipulation of gun, basic shooting skills using an IPSC target, ability to concentrate while a Range Officer shadows you) before being eligible. So, people who have just started shooting but think they meet the basic criteria can undergo the test.

I felt ready last November, passed the evaluation and enrolled in the next available Black Badge class. By the way, all the people registered in that course passed, so I think that the approach has merit.

Well I'am going to be taking my Black Badge in early May at the EOHC and have been shooting for about a year, as I wanted a year of shooting before doing the Black Badge. I do not know if I have any bad habits. My dad is ex RCMP and taught me how to shoot along with Bartledan showing me the proper grip to use.

I went also went to one of the IPSC practices at the EOHC over the summer and got alot of good advice and instruction from the people putting it on. They are on this board, but I forgot thier names, sorry.

Ultimately it comes down to the student wanting to learn and listen. I am sure there are Black Badge instructors who have had shooters with little to no experience and think they know everything.

Me personally I'am anxious for the course and will listen to anyone who can help me shoot better.

P.S. I should hopefully have my IPSC production gun this coming week.

There is no such club evaluation rule in IPSC Ontario...I'm sure this must just be a misunderstanding.

I know there is a club level evalutaion at the RA to allow you to partake in the RA IPSC Practices that take place on Saturdays (and is a great idea BTW) These sessions are not in anyway connected to IPSC Ontario, so IPSC Ontario policies do not apply. Clubs are free to set whatever guidlines they wish for Club Level activities.

BB Courses and Sanctioned Matches are different as they are administered by IPSC Ontario, not at the club level...

All information can be found here http://www.ipsc-ont.org/training.htm

Anyone can feel free to contact me or any member of the board if you have any further questions

Craig Stoklosar, Section Coordinator

And Quigley.... well, one day you'll meet a woman.... she may not have all of her teeth or appendages and she may smell like old socks and Alberta ### but she'll be your special girl....

My recent IPSC/shooting experience...

My 2 cents.

I began pistol shooting this summer (bullseye) and had less than 1000 rounds under my belt when a BB course came up this November. I did not have a handgun, and in fact did not even have my PAL yet! The instructor, Pat Warner, was very kind and let me use one of his 'spare' pistols and of course ammo, because I couldn't buy any! I learned alot, had an awesome time, and shot more centrefire ammo that weekend than since I first showing an interest in the sport.

Two things: 1) My gun handling habits were only good ones - meaning observing strict safety rules at an indoor range. I hadn't had time yet to develop bad habits... 2) The BB instructor watched me carefully at the beginning and realized I was being safe at all times.

If you feel confident around pistols, then you may not want to wait a year to take a BB course. Talk to the instructor - he/she will tell you if you are ready for the course. If I waited 12 months to take the course, I wouldn't be shooting IPSC today:mad:

The BB course walks and sometimes runs :D you though every step of IPSC shooting, all the while being safe. It is an awesome course to take, even if you never thought you would shoot practical shooting competitions!

I find it puzzling; what do people who aren't qualified to instruct Black Badge courses base their opinion on who should, and who shouldn't, be allowed to take the course......

I do see everyones point about training from scratch, as to guide in the right & safe directions, but my arguement was directed to the first year of shooting & not the old guys who've been shooting for years & some have real bad habits , that's for sure.
Also going on a few new shooters that I've personally seen breaking safety infractions within a few days or weeks of just passing a PAL & club safety course. These guys would not pass the BB course for sure.
Yes, I did approach them & advise them of their booboos.

Tritium, why don't you just have some of your brotherin, pull over these guys & give them tickets for broken tail lights ? (that you busted the night before);)

I'd like to know how many Black Badge courses you've conducted and how many people have you successfully trained?

Well colt45gunner, I was never much of a traffic cop so I wouldn't even know where to start on that one... :D
I'm not big on hassling gunowners either... some of those folks would stop to help an officer who is fighting some goon on the side of the road so I don't like alienating those who take an active role in helping enforcement where help is needed. I personally think we are all responsible for our own safety.....

Now, Dragoon... who are you talking about there? I would teach BB but it kind of sounds like my daily work being done on weekends. :)

I have to agree that in alot of cases some of us shouldn't be critiquing those who are kind enough to help out. You know as well as we do though that there are instructors that leve alot to be desired... not you, you can shoot! I haven't been taught by you though but, there is always room left to learn more!;)

WTF?

So only BB instructors are allowed to have opinions?

Who elected you as IPSC god?

Anyone is entitled to an opinion. Whether or not you choose to agree is a separate issue.

Personally I tend to lean towards people having prior shooting experience before taking on a BB course. Otherwise they tend to hold the rest of the class back.

Oh BTW........I have taught exactly ZERO BB courses. But I have assisted in 4 of them.

Yes, everyone is allowed to have an opinion......however, that does not mean every opinion is equally valid..... For instance, I've never shot Trap or Skeet. Am I entitled to express an opinion on the sport? Absolutely! Does it mean much? You decide......
