IPSC / IDPA who shoots to win ??

Great question....can't wait to see some of the answers.
From the start, I was caught up with shooting to win....I now tend to shoot to better my performance from my last match...I think a lot more about my mistakes, and try not to repeat them....

Define winning? Coming first?

Even if I win, what's more important is the feeling of "did I perform up to MY expectations". There are many times where I've won, but walked away feeling like a loser (keep your comments to yourself!!!), and other times where I have not won, but have felt I shot the best match possible and feel like a winner.

I doubt anybody is at a match just "to win".

You are right.
Have a plan, know what you do wrong, work on it and eliminate from your performance.
When I shoot a match, regardless the level I follow certain pattern:
1. Safety
2. Accuracy
3. Mental preparedness for every stage. Screwing up one stage is not end of the world. I sometimes get so upset with me, especially when making simple mistake. I let it out of me and next stage is a new game.
4. I pay money to compete, I hate throwing the stages, always play till end.
5. After the match, analyze it on the way home. Think what went wrong, listen to your friends, and work on it.
6. Have a journal, which includes dates, matches, how many rounds, practice/rounds and most important honest comments.

I like winning, especially for all the women, and sponsors throwing themselves at you! Lol ;)
I don't win every match, but i enjoy doing well and bettering myself. I enjoy the people and promoting a shooting sport in Canada. I even enjoy putting on matches sometimes!

pretty much my philosophy

Right now i just expect myself to shoot better than my last match. Make less mistakes each time and learn from better shooters when i get the chance to.

im the type of person who cant do something competitive without taking it seriously (i cant play on casual sports leagues, i end up being the guy who annoys everyone) so i shoot to win every time

but, if i dont win im not pissed. im only pissed if i shoot worse than i know i can.

Defining win is hard in IPSC. There are so many level of shooters, classes, age groups, however I will never buy that someone is going to the match for fun only and doesn't care for 'wining' :)
It is a lie. For fun we can shoot at the club with no pressure of timer and competition.
