IPSC newbie question

Ok good, I was worried there. Just ordered some new hearing protection too.

Don't worry. The one important thing is not to rush things.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Watch your muzzle and keep your finger clear of the trigger and everything will be good.

I have to ask, since I have not seen them brought up in IPSC conversation yet, are Taurus pistols not worth looking at? At all? Just not for IPSC?

Specifically I'm talking about the PT 24/7 OSS-DS9 - http://www.arcimboldeb.com/img/eventi/armi4/9.jpg

I quite like what I've read and heard about this pistol but haven't seen it recommended in the IPSC circles much... Is there a good reason for that? Or are they just less "cool" than other brands at the moment?

I appreciate any light that can shed on the topic. I apologize for the slight highjacking of the thread, but it seemed like a semi-logic progression of the conversation.

Cheers,

I noticed that this Taurus 24/7 uses double action/single action striker.
Is this something new?
Wonder what is the trigger like in DA/SA with this type of action.

Apparently the DA is not the best, though it can be adjusted to be less "gritty", or so I'm told. The SA trigger is reportedly crisp and consistent.

For the question on the taurus 24 7

Looks like hand position will have to change during a mag change, extra movement takes more time. Bore may be higher than other models making recoil control a little slower. If you have one shoot it, and if you want one well buy it and run what you brung. It may not be the ideal ipsc platform but the main thing is to have fun and be safe.

Forgive me if I am stating the obvious, but I want to make one common sense comment.
If you are just starting and planning to be somewhat competitive, it likely doesn't make sense to experiment with equipment and especially use a not-popular gun. Look what top shooters are using and reuse their experience as much as possible before you gather some of your own. At some point it won't matter what gun you are using, but at the beginning it would be easier for you to learn the sport with a simple and proven gun.

That's the long version of "Get a Glock"...lol

Thanks guys, all great advise. My original plan was to go with an SP-01 Shadow, but I'm a sucker for polymer frame pistols... The way it's looking, the Taurus might have to be my 2nd purchase though.

I am pretty taken by the new P-01 Duty as well... I can't seem to get a good baring on size though, as many of the photos I've seen don't have any frame of reference in the shot. Anyone know of a retailer in NS that has one in stock - so I could wrap my mitts around it?

Thanks again,

That would only work if you a robot like Dave Sevigny. If you really want a Glock, maybe better wait when Gen4 model will be available.

S&W M&P or STI's GP6 (or original Grand Power K100) been used by a few guys in IPSC. Note how much higher the beaver tail on M&P, comparing to the Taurus...

Personally, I found plastic frame guns too light and harder to control the the heavier metal-framed ones, so easier to recover from recoil. Too bad they don't make Glock with a metal frame. :D

There's a company in the USA that makes metal frames for the Glock. I doubt you'd be able to get one up here though.

Shot a RTF 17 today, really liked it! I have no problem with the recoil or flip on them and really like the handling.

Well I ended up buying a Pistol, and its probably not the #1 choice for serious competitors, but it is a gun that I like very much and I will give IPSC a try. I bought a CZ-75b Satin Nickel. I know the shadow is the better one for IPSC, but I liked the looks of this gun and I got a good deal on it so to make a long story short, Its in the Mail as I type this.

What would be a good set-up as far as Belts, Holster, and Mag Pouches ?? I don't need the latest, most expensive, best stuff on the market, but I also dont want to look out of place.

Hey, don't worry about using a 75b.
I shoot this in IPSC and IDPA and beat some of those with Shadows.

I use a Wilderness Tactical Instructors Belt with 5 stitch and Bladetech Holster and Fobus Pouches.
Works for IDPA and IPSC.

Probably getting better pouches though in the future but the above is cost efficient to start with.

This is the gun I bought, but it won't be here for another week. Its coming from B.C. to Ontario.

That will work! What club are you shooting at?

Buy any holster but a Forbus, and you will be fine. BladeTech makes good stuff, and Uncle mike's is decent entry level gear.

I would suggest a CR Speed Belt,or Double Alpha

Josko @ Double Tap can probably set you up with everything you need. http://www.doubletapsports.com/

I was going to join up at the Waterford Sportsman Club. Thats were I took my handgun safety course and everyone there I met seemed friendly and helpful. I have been to Shooters Choice in Waterloo, but that is a pretty far drive for me and is quite expensive.

I am just starting out here so please excuse me for sounding like a major Newbie, but would you guys say I should rush out and upgrade the Case that the pistol comes in as well, or will it do for now.

You can kind of tell from the Picture that the case is cheap. Does anyone recommend a decent quality case that won't set me back to much $$. I know that quality is'nt cheap, but I don't need something that a pro would use. I will check double tap like was suggested for the other equipment, I just wanted to see what you guys thought.
