IPSC On-line match sign up

It scares me a little, but the hockey analogy actually makes sense to me. Coaches, Conveners and Board members are all volunteer positions, but Refs get paid. The reason is that Refs bring a certain skill set to the table – one that costs them time and money to attain. They take all everyone's crap while being held to a higher standard of performance. They're accoutable for their decisions, not unlike our RO’s and CRO’s. In our current system, what’s the incentive for someone to become an RO?

I personally don't like the idea of "Professional RO's" You need to be an active shooter to be able to predict what shooters may or may not do...

All esle being equal...active shooters generally make better RO's

I agree with that, but it doesn't preclude some kind of recognition (or reward) for taking on the responsibility of officiating. Can you give me an example of a sport where the officials are not (or were not) participants?

Paying RO's and build crews would solve the problem, but match fees will have to increase. From my calculations a level 1 would be $40-45 and a Level 2 $50-60.

The other solution would be that every shooter must work.

Peter: Sorry for the "must", it's that IPSC communist again!

Or... we could do the thing that started this thread - give them early sign-up and perhaps a discount on the match fee. For most RO's that is reward enough. I can't understand how this creates a 2-tier second class shooter situation.

It's merely fair and reasonable compensation for taking on the additional task and responsibility.

Your calculations are way off.
It can be done with the standard rates.
Match runs smooth and in time, shooters are happy and will come back.
Actually if you feed the shooters as well, (I did) you will not have to ask or expect help. Treat your customers (shooters) like gold and they will help you and you will find that your waiting list will be long.

How can you possible pay RO's and build crews and keep the match fee the same? Are you paying $1 an hour, we still will have the same problem.

Just curious...but how long were you the IPSC Rep?

Fair compensation can take many forms. It doesn't have to be a paycheque.

Very true...

The RO's don't have to be paid...they just have to be appreciated and respected.

Some clubs do it very well (make sure the RO's get to sit down for lunch, check in on a regular basis to see if anyone need water or a rest...and maybe a round of beer at the end of the match) It's cost effective...and it works.

Hey Quigley
make sure you tell every match director about the round of beer after the match it sounds like a good idear to me, we should make that a rule.

Once again, only the few seem to have the common sence to understand.
Thanks Vipor,I don;t know who you are, but if you can help at the matches we have you will allways have a shooting spot.
