I've shot one of those before, the idea is to make sure it's a few feet in front of a target, if you just put the target right on the back of the steel plate, you get nasty shredding when people clip the edge of the target.

I watched myself on video last night, went past target on 2 separate occasions while reloading, will have to get a longer leg to kick myself with. But it was a lot of fun and everyone there was quite supportive and gave lots of advice.
