Hi guys

After 7 years of shooting IPSC in Production (M), Standard (M) and Classic (GM), I finally decided to hit the most abandoned (at least here, in Alberta) Revolver division :)

Planning on using a SW 627 and shoot minor :)

Question: what moon clips should I use (make, thickness, tightness). All info and advices are welcome :) and highly appreciated.

Thanks
K

Is there even a revolver division? I have never seen one in the Edmonton area.

Also I am going to shamelessly leave this ad here since it is kinda on topic.

Yeah there been a revolver div since the start of IPSC. Just nobody shoots it anymore. Personally when I shot IPSC in the early 2000s Ive never seen someone shoot revolvers. But just last month one guy shoots PPC with us, uses a S&W 66 in IPSC. Kinda was shocked.

The 929 is 8 round and moon clipped right out of the box. It's also 9mm so brass is cheaper. Whatever you decide on, with any S&W gun these days you might want to examine it in person due to lack of quality control.

I took a serious look at the revolver division for IPSC last year. After watching a few guys shoot it in NB last year and a local guy shooting it here in NS, I just can't ever see doing it. Revolver fun for PPC or steel (bought a GP100 for those), but it looks painful and not much fun for IPSC. To each his own though

I understand that there is only one person shooting IPSC with a revolver in the Calgary area ( not me). Drop by Proline for moon-clips they had several that I'm using in my 627 and they work much better than the S&W ones that come with the pistol. I have my black badge, but currently just plinking.

TK. Any new Smith is not going to compare to the older models. My wife took her new 617 apart and she proclaimed it's crap compared to her older 686. We shoot ICORE with 929's that we had sent out for upgrades (polishing & sights). They shoot great, however mine sounds "tinny" when dryfired compared to my wife's. Doesn't affect how it shoots.

We use DAA moons which happen to be half the cost of the TK's. I do have a pack of TK's we just got for cheap due to a slight mixup when we sent our cylinders down to TK for champering. They do seem to fit a little better. Need to keep note of those.

There are a few revo shooters in IPSC here in Ontario. One happens to be president of our club :) I shoot my semi in IPSC but might use the 929 to practice before a few big ICORE matches that are coming up.

On a humorous note I was taking to a IPSC club rep in my squad yesterday when I mentioned I shoot better with my 929 in ICORE. He said that's because most ICORE shooters are old and fat lol.

I shoot ipsc revolver I think there is like 6 of us in Canada. TK make the best moonclips. Call them and ask what thickness they suggest.
You may also require a bmt mooner demooner. It is not just a cool gadget it reduces the chance of the moonclips getting bent unloading and loading.

Also you might consider loading 38 short colt to speed the reload time.

A buddy just took a private days training with David Olhasso and he asked why the TK clips when the others are cheaper to buy. I personally have gone to 38 SC Starline Brass using Berry's 9mm bullet. Just came back from shooting in Michigan and the gun a TRR8 and ammo ran flawlessly.
Now just to find a smith who can work the action down for me. I tried a 627 previouly owned by Olhasso and it was like 4# and my friend won't part with it.

since 38 short colt is hard to find or $60/100, I decided to make my own :) but to go with ".38 Mid Colt" :) simply trim .38SPL to 0.900" ...... it clears the cylinder much better than a .38SPL plus less pressure than a .38SC
I just trimmed 150 pcs and will run a trial load soon...will post results as soon as I have them :)

Okay I am going to get burned bad but do any IPSC revolver shooters use speed loaders?

My GP 100 won't take moon clips without modification and I am not totally sold on IPSC revolver.

I haved spent 500 on a holster, speedloaders, speedloader pouches, so going to moon clips will be a cost I would like to avoid for now.

Not many that I've seen. But then shooting 6rounds will be a hardship regardless unless you find a revolver friendly match. Which are extremely rare.
The speed difference between moonclips and speedloaders is minimal if you practice. The annoying part is finding your brass after

I was able to put together 7 revolver shooters on my squad at a level 2 qualifier I ran in July (helps when you are the match director .... lol). We all ran 929's. Going to try and put together a full squad for the next years Easter qualifers :)
