buckshot?? Save your shells for the deer season. A few match setups allow only #2-4 birdshot, most 6-9 shot size, with slugs for paper targets. ideal shot size is Birdshot 7 1/2 3 - 3 1/2 dram equivalent 1 1/8 oz

All shotgun matches that I have been to and the ones we have occasionally held at our club require #4 or larger (eg. #3, #2, etc) LEAD shot only. No BB steel loads, etc.

Anyone who's ever RO'd shotgun stages will know that BB's are very bouncy!

Lighter shot usually doesn't have enough weight to knock over steel depending on the distance(s). If everything is close up, then lighter shot is fine. But for the "all purpose" solution, #4/5 is a good size.

Naturally this all depends on your shotgun setup, choke (full, modified, adjustable), barrel length, etc.

Hope that helps. :dancingbanana:

Whoops! I forgot to mention, Wal-Fart usually sells Federal #4 in bulk boxes of 100 for around $20. Which is dirt cheap I think! I've used them alot and it has worked quite well for me.

I'm curious if shot sizes are different up your way? I didn't think they were. The general purpose shot size we use down here in the states is 7.5 with a few people like me using 6's now and then. I've found that using the correct choke is more important than shot size unless the targets are really far out. I generally shoot a modified and feel that even with that moderate choke, it is usually too much and I get rifle like patterns out of my Browning Gold. I generally like to keep my options open and will sometimes carry #4 buck but I can't remember a match where I've ever used it.

What kinds of steel are all of you shooting with this #4 and less?

We're shooting full poppers at 10+ m (min) and you'd better put 90% of the shot at the top of the poopper with #4.

In this end of the country, we use 00 buck and #2 to make sure the steel goes down.

Also, there is an option in the rule book to shoot at paper with shot; provided 00 or bigger is used.

thanks for all the input guys, the thing is , where I came from, we have no option but only the 00buck, especially hunting is banned, so the shotgun is for self defence use only. I am not sure if IPSC specify the ammo you can use.so right now I am searching an ammo for poppers. and not for hunting. thanks again.

not only shotgun but all forms of hunting. so our shotgun primary purpose is for self and home protction. Philippines. although we can always sneak around and hunt the boars.of course with police or military escort/ buddy. usually we use the 308 nato which is a military round. I doubt if you can find a hunting shotgun in the gunstores there, usually smooth bores. what a weired place ehhh.

We shoot at the regular poppers that we shoot pistols at. Ours are the forward falling type.

will give it a try the 0buck and #2, I know the 00buck wont have any problem of jnocking down PP, searching the best load for PP and the least recoil, thanks again

That Winchester Lawman law enforcement low recoil stuff is not too bad, (even the slugs) if you can get it.
