I am browsing for my first shotgun purchase, as i do not even own a 12ga yet!!!
Let's say i just want to have fun at it but want something i can shoot a while before outshooting.
To be different that all the other shotgun threads, i will simply keep it at this:

Is a choke necessary or highly recommended?

Budget is an issue so getting barrel threaded afterwards would be not doable at the moment.
Budget wise i'm between 400-500$, the way i see it:
mossberg 500/590 have got 20 inch barrels, 7+1 capacity, non-threaded from factory
Remington 870 has got 18.5'' barrel, 6+1 capacity, threaded from factory

Depending on how chokes play a major role will influence my choice quite a bit.

Chokes can be useful in some situations, but in all honesty not a make it or break it factor in most stages. Capacity is by far a more critical issue, and reloading skill (ie PRACTICE).
The Mossberg 590A1 is a very good shotgun and will work very well. You should have an 8+1 capacity out of the box with 2 3/4" shells, and can get extension tubes pretty easy to get beyond that. I added a +1 so that I could get nine total in the tube (since you can't load more than nine to start anyway), but many people will add up to a +4 extension quite easily.

Alright , i have spotted the one, 590A1, 9 shot bead sight, 599$+tx, 100$ overbudget but i can live with that
If i get competing a bit more i guess the 590A1's barrel is thick enough to get threaded.
I know this is a redundant subject here, just making sure i won't waste any money as it seems to be hard to earn some lately.

In most cases, you should be able to knock down any plate you shoot at with a cylinder choke.

The difficulty you may run into with a short barrel and open choke is that your shot velocity and pattern density may not be enough to knock over a heavier plate or popper unless you hit it perfectly and you are close enough to it.

If the course of fire has penalty plates close to the targets, there is a good chance you will knock down everything if you don't have a tighter choke to use.

You can mitigate some of this by using more potent shells when needed, and getting a bit closer to the targets, but that isn't the optimal solution (added recoil and time wasted with extra movement)

If you can find a used Benelli Nova with 24" barrel, I think you would get a much better gun for the money vs the mossberg or remington.
Al Flahetry's (site sponsor) has 28" versions for sale at $475 +tax.
28" is a little heavy for my personal taste (balance and swing) but could be good for some.

Really though, you should try and handle as many as you can, get a feel for what you like, and go from there.
Seeing as there is a budget involved, I wouldn't commit to something unless you get to actually see what you like or don't like.

I have found a few decent priced benellis here and there, they all seem to have 4+1 capacities.
Will study up on mag tube ext. for benellis

Edit : i might be on for the benelli nova now, i have found that tube ext. are made by nordic components, just have to see if someone carries some in country

Sent order to Wolverines for the Benelli Nova 24", they are available. An OK price considering that i do not have to get threaded for chokes and is almost ready to start 3gun. Definatly a bump up in price compared to the 28" ones.
What is the most common used ammo pouch for shotgun? I know i could just go to a match and see whats up, but they are not soon and wish to get some practice with something that makes sense before the summer.

Cool thank you very much guys! Right what i was looking for, as for the rules and setups i will browse the web, i just wanted to make sure i dont spend money uselessly to start off with, its hard enough to earn as it is.

I have rem870 with 26" barrel that i will start using for ipsc competitions. Big mag extension and i love it.
Funny thing is that with this rem i do trap really well too.

Biggest thing for me was how gun fits me. I almost went for a supernova but changed my mind.

I am right handed, so i naturally have more dexterity with my right hand.
I have almost never handled a shotgun before, as im a pistol guy with 30k+ rounds thru them
So having no habits to break, i was thinking of reloading this way

And with the links the guys have sent me, it'S exactly what i will be going for.

I have just received my Benelli Nova 24'' from Grouse River. Mag ext. tube on it's way from cactus tactical. Will then order load 2 shells holders from red tip bullet.
Thanks to Paul for showing me this option, as i love it. Lightweight, 24'' fiber bead barrel, very large and long feeding port, silky smooth action, already threaded and came w/3 chokes.
Trigger weight is monstreous tough, my trigger weight scale constantly breaks the shot @ 6 1/2#. This is not too much acceptable, it's the only hiccup i did not expect from this setup, i am sure it is easily solved once i have the time to look into it.

What was the order process like with cactus? Did they require any additional import stuff?

Also, what size extension did you order? Looking for one for my superdupernova, curious as to what yours looks like on a 24" in regards to my 28".

I ordered a +4 extension from cactus, i assured my order was under 100$, and they just sent me a shipping notice without asking for paperwork. For 100$ i got extension, spring, and upgrade follower. Will get mag/barrel clamp on my next brownells order.
Lets just be clear i did not receive my stuff yet, i may end up getting clocked hard on duty or whatever.

I estimate my +4 will stick out pass the barrel, not much but a bit. I will be able to load to ipsc maximum of 8+1, or so i have read...

Practice, i will go to eosc for th shooting and my basement for reloading dummy rounds as fast as possible
Compete, when we look at the ipsc ontario calendar, they hosted a few shotgun matches last year, the majority seeming to happen at east elgin.
I will not try to perform like i try to do with pistol, something different to have fun with.
