IPSC. Should I even start?

Minimum 45 days. If you tick "yes" to an boxes (usually requires a longer background check) it can take longer, a few months.

Hi everyone.

I am interested in shooting IPSC production in the next year.
I don’t have my RPAL yet or a pistol and I am wondering if it
is even worth starting the process with the proposed handgun
ban looming.

What advice would you give to someone like me who wants
to get into this sport in Canada right now?

Yes.
Yes, get your rpal.
Yes, try IPSC and others if you like.
Yes, get involved and participate.
Advice; just do it.
Government actions come and go and if your going to wait for a resolve you’ll never get anything done.
Worst case your a (possibility) grandfathered shooter instead of a wanna be coulda been but never was shooter.
Best case everything is resolved next fall.
So as several adds stated;
“Buy the boat.”
“Buy the Harley.”
Or, in this context,
“Become an active pistol sports shooter.”
Life is short, it’s just seems longer if you fill it with regrets...

Stop thinking about it and book your RPAL course. It's gonna be close to a 6-8mts before you get to take your first handgun to the range and unless you are a natural shot with guns, another 6mts of regular shooting to become proficient enough to do your black badge course. If you keep saying you'll sign up later, a whole year would have passed in a blink and you'd still be thinking about signing up when you could be having a heck of a time shooting matches had you gotten started today.

I can’t argue with that. Thanks!

To answer the original question, yes. Yes you should.

Formal, organized competition is a great way of validating handgun ownership to the non-gunners in your life...besides being fun.

If you want to run this past your wife, take the next step and get her shooting too. We could have a few more women shooting and it is something you can do together. And all the women competitors I have met enjoy the match as much as the men.

I’m proceeding with gun buying/building as normal. They might grandfather existing guns and when the CPC gets back into power things go back to normal. How many here wish they had a prohib license and could have got one at the time?

Before you buy anything head on over to the IPSC BC website and forums and talk to IPSC shooters.
Buy once, cry once.
Or, become skilled at buying stuff, then selling here on the equipment exchange, and buying stuff again.
BC also has vendors for specific IPSC gear.

www.ipscbc.com

And there's also this website too for IPSC/USPSA and IDPA (and steel challenge).
www.uspsabc.com

Welcome to the addiction.

I live in Surrey and shoot both IPSC and IDPA. If you want to chat over beer, just let me know. I can give you a rundown on both sports.

skip the XD, get the 320 if you like it. XDs are junk, I don't say that often about pistols, but always say it about XDs. I've seen exactly one last through an evening class, one, in nearly 20 years of teaching classes at Abbotsford, the amount of suck contained in those guns is legendary. A HiPoint would be a better a choice than an XD...

If you want to try out a few other guns, CZ, Sig, Glock etc let me know, we have a nice armory at Abby and we can arrange for new shooters to try them out, you just pay for ammo, no licence needed

if you get the 320 get the X5 version, then if you shoot IPSC you can just remove the magwell. It is a far superior frame/grip design over the regular one, and it comes with phenomenal sights too.

With any luck in 2019 you'll be able to shoot IPSC with a non-restricted PCC. License problem solved.

I already have a CZ Shadow 2 for IPSC production. What would the closest IPDA production legal gun? e.g Glock model ??

I know huge difference, but considering another gun that is allowed for IPDA or use in 3 gun if I get tired of hauling “the tank” CZ around, love that CZ, shoots straight but it’s heavy...
