I am very interested in IPSC shooting. What do I need to do to get my BB? I know I need to get into a course. But what do I need in the way of ammo/equipment? It looks like its a blast (Pun intended). It would be nice to actually do something with my pistols other than hunt paper.

Thanks,

beside a gun, you will want 4 mags (5 is better,) a holster, mag holders, a good stiff belt, safety glasses, ear protection and 500 rounds of ammunition. then go do your black badge course and do not worry about trying to practise before you go as that just makes it harder on the instructor breaking your bad habits. however you should know the control on the handgun you are going to use.

It would also be swell if you could hit a 12 inch target at 20 yards 80% of the time or better. If you can't hit the target in your own time, you can't expect to hit it under pressure.

Thanks for all the information. I need to save up a bit of money for some of the extra kit I need. Mags, belt, holster etc. Hopefully I can get into a course and get the appropriate stuff I need before the snow flies.

Holster

If you buy your own holster make sure you get the right kind of holster for IPSC.Has to have belt loop not paddle holster.

Used police duty belt at a surplus store: $20
Used duty belt vertical mag pouch: $15 (cut of velcro flaps) X2
3 Belt Keepers:$15
Kydex Holster: $60 (blade-tech sting ray for instance)
500 rounds of 9mm: $90
Sunscreen:$13
5 mags:$150

Having your Black Badge: Priceless

Sign up for the course now, they are rare and fill up quickly.

I just did the course 2 weeks ago, if you have any questions feel free to PM me, I'll give you my phone number.

Could you (or anyone) illustrate the difference please? I understand about belt loop, not the paddle part.

A paddle holster is has a part that slips inside the waistband of your pants, designed for use without a belt.

In IPSC you want a holster that attaches to a gun belt. I was told on course the rules state your gun belt must secure to yout inner belt in at least 3 places or by velcro. The idea is that when you draw your pistol, your holster doesn't end up giving you a wedgie. If you plan on competeting in IDPA as well as IPSC, you may want to consider getting a holster that is IDPA approved like the Blade-Tech I mentioned earlier. For IDPA you need a holster that will secure your pistol when turned upside down.

From the IPSC rule book:
5.2.3 Unless otherwise specified in the written stage briefing, the belt carrying the holster and all allied equipment
must be worn at waist level. The belt or the inner belt or both must be either permanently sewn at the waist,
or secured with a minimum of three belt loops.

The nice thing about using loaner gear for the course is that you don't have to commit a bunch of money up front when you don't have the benefit of experience. Once you have gone through the course and had a chance to see what people are using...see how the equipment you are using works for you...ask a few questions and find out WHY they made those specific choices, you will have way more information than you did when you started. You can then make a more informed choice about where you are going to put your money.

I'm sure there a lot of guys out there who would be willing to help you out so long as you pay for the ammo and maybe a box of beer or something.
