i hunt mostly with open sights. haven't shot a deer with a scoped rifle since '98. but i did just get a scope mounted on one of my rifles, so i am not a diehard.

i think iron sights are a better choice overall than a scope. scopes are easier to damage, easier to knock out of alignment, tend to make the rifle top heavy, and add weight and cost.

and really, what percentage of shots are beyond 200 yards? i think the best place for a scoped rifle is in thick timber (a low powered scope) to pick up light and to see shooting lanes.

i would rather save the scope money and put it towards a nice binocular.

Scopes are afar superior aiming device than any iron sight.

I rarely use irons, they just don't interst me when I can have a better aiming device thatis as durable as modern scopes are these days!

how about both???? The rifle i was useing had see trough sights so it had a scope and iorns.

The see through mounts place the scope too high for proper cheek position on the stock and the mounts are weaker than lower mounts,a bad combination.

Yup there is some brilliant advice... see through mounts... they are about as useful as mudflaps on a spaceship.

its scary how popular the see-thru mounts are though, when at the range the weekend before moose season opens

Um, I think you guys misread this. These are special sights used to shoot holes in water troughs...

Personally I have some milsurps that I certainly won't scope, nor will I scope my Brno .22. I am certain that one day I will actually hit something with these guns...

Everything else is scoped or is going to be. Why be at a disadvantage? ;)

For sure man like where else you gonna get some mounts that you can like, see right through :D

That's a pretty scarey avatar ther buckwheat:eek:

I use scopes on my hunting rifles although once in a while, I'll pack an open sighted M94 .30-30 along for sh!ts & giggles.
Tod, your new avatar ROCKS (heh, heh, heh)

Those see through mounts are very popular down here with the local yo-yos, usually coming on a 7400 in 30/06, but on just about every other rifle as well.

They suck!!

Scopes on my modrn stuff, irons on my BPCR's and on my front stuffers.

The only thing I want to see through when I'm hunting is the trees!!

First thing I say when somebody asks about "tuning up the moose gun" is
" get rid of those pieces of crap on your scope!!:D
