i hunt mostly with open sights. haven't shot a deer with a scoped rifle since '98. but i did just get a scope mounted on one of my rifles, so i am not a diehard.
i think iron sights are a better choice overall than a scope. scopes are easier to damage, easier to knock out of alignment, tend to make the rifle top heavy, and add weight and cost.
and really, what percentage of shots are beyond 200 yards? i think the best place for a scoped rifle is in thick timber (a low powered scope) to pick up light and to see shooting lanes.
i would rather save the scope money and put it towards a nice binocular.
