Is .410 enough to take down a large animal

Mkrainc, you did say they fled after one shot........so what's the real issue here friend?
Although this situation must have been a bit nerve racking, in retrospect his shotgun was sufficient.
Perhaps next time he'll bring more than 9 rounds, to get a warm & fuzzy feeling maybe.
I guess he chose a shotgun over a magnum handgun so he can hunt with it as well?

I hear you and agree with you. He had enough firepower, just not enough fire.

Hunting isn't something he does. He bought the shotgun just to take it along camping, hiking, panning etc. for "bear defence."

I remember reading how to protect oneself against bears and identifying their scat. It was advisable to wear a bell around your neck and keep pepper spray on you at all times. When identifying black bear scat you looked for berry seeds and fur. Grizz scat had bells in it and smelled like pepper! Laugh2TWK

And maybe even some 410 shotshells, lol

Really? A 410? Why not go up a step and use a 28 gauge? Or a 16?

Big animals close in require two types of defense: distance (stay the heck away from them) or power (mass times velocity). If you can't stay away from big, dangerous animals, carry a big, dangerous round. If you don't shoot at geese at 40 yards with a 410, why would you shoot at a bear at 40 yards (even with a puny little slow slug) unless you want to get its attention?

So does this mean that if you shove your barrel up a bears a$$ , you might be able to protect yourself?

This is very false and misleading information. A 30.30 shoots a 170 grain bullet at 2300 feet per second, where a .410 shoots a 80 grain bullet at 1200 feet per second. Comparing a muzzle energy of one gun to the energy of another at 300 yards away is a pretty poor explanations to give a new guy.

+1

A marlin camp carbine in 9mmP would be MUCH better than an anemic little .410 slug

Remember Star Wars.... How Luke blew up the death star... how huge the death star was and that tiny little core he had to hit in order for it to explode and save the day?...

That's a good comparison as to what a .410 would be like in a bear defense scenario.... except the death star stayed still and the bear would be roaring and brandishing it's teeth and barreling down at you at about 30 Miles an hour..... :)

possibly the greatest thing posted this year :D

Best to discourage the newbie than to give any hope that maybe it will work.
Maybe it will, but maybe it won't, at least not pronto.
Just my couple of pennies.

yep, if you are gonna carry a 410, wtf, you're a way better off to carry ole gramps, a 12 ga! ;)

We slaughter the cows at the farm with a 410 slug. Prefered caliber as it doesn't exit the skull.

at point blank, right? we used to use 22 shorts on the farm for butchering purposes, right between the eyes at point blank, they also got the job done and never left the skull. actually, quite unbelievable to me, and I was a witness many a time, as a kid, a junior butcher!

I think the OP made a typo!
What he meant to type wasn't 410- it was actually 416. and yes , a 416 Rem is perfect for bear defence! Highly reccomended actually.....;)

Never could find much of a use for a .410, least of all, for bear defence.

well, they are one of the best for Grouse defense, I have found over the years. back in around the mid 50's, I was absolutely fearless, while walking in the bush in Saskatchewan (where the Grouse's were monsters) with my Dad's Stevens single shot barrel break 410 in my hands. No Grouse was gonna get me, No-sir-e! I have since upgraded to a nice little Safari Arms over & under 410. I feel safe with 2 shots now, here in Mb, where packs of Grouse have been known to attack a lone hunter with his head down!

My favorite for Grouse defence too! I have 5 of them.

An IGA sxs, a Savage 24 22lr over .410, a Mossberg 183 bolt and 2 Yildiz folders.
