Is 45 the most accurate pistol caliber?

Not sure you can really say which is the most accurate cartridge. Jerry Michelek (sorry for the spelling) hit a plate at 1000yards with a 9mm on his second shot. All the cartridges I use are more accurate than me. Some are better at longer ranges like the 9mm (pointy nose more aerodynamic) and some are better at short to intermediate ranges 45acp. It really comes down more to the quality of the cartridge, the gun and the shooter. I am sure some are more inherantly accurate than others but for the vast majority it doesn't really matter.

It's a combination of load compatibility with gun.

For years it was said that the .44 Spl. was an "inherently accurate", along with the .308. Yeah, they are, if you have feed them quality and do your part.

With my handloads, my wife's new box stock CZ Shadow puts 5 rds off hand into a group at 15 yds you can cover with a loonie and room to spare. She is still learning the gun hasn't put more than 250 rds through it to date.

Recently a US gun writer told of receiving yet another target fired by a friend with his 1911 from a ransom rest using mixed 'range pick up' brass. It was a very tight group, something in the order of 1" at 25 yds.

Mike Venturino told of visiting Clint Smith at his facility and shooting steel targets with .308's out to 750 yds. Ammo was loaded on a progressive press with measure thrown (not weighed) charges. Again, brass was unsorted 'range pick ups'.

So much for sorting, trimming, weighing charges, etc. But - if you think it really matters, then it does.

I think that 45 are on top shelf of accuracy, to this day i have yet to find a handgun more accurate than my Les Baer... JP.

I'm with you . 45s are the way to go.

Yes that is right. I gather the gun is tuned and sighted for that specific load going at around 825ft/sec. The gentleman I was shooting with indicated that some re-manufacturers (Wolf I think) are making batches of it so I'm keeping my eyes open for some. Ammo now, gun later I hope - funds (and wife ;-) permitting lol

Oh ho, man! You know you've got a serious problem when you're buying ammo with a gun in mind!? BahahaahahaLaugh2 (awesome!)

...so if one is to use a pistol for 1000 yard targets a 9mm is the way to go because of the "pointy nose"? Thanks for this.

So true, so true... (slow head shake, looking down in shame). What's worse is that I didn't realize it until you pointed it out. Not sure that even qualifies as Step 1, lol.

YOUR EXPERIENCES only- not documented fact- you're still not addressing the variances , even though you've taken out the "human "variables by using the ransom rest- anymore than Winchester 555 works the best of any out there- in MY GUN ONLY- the best I ever ran into was Winchester dynapoint, but that stuff is as rare as hens teeth-granted, the '41 is a target model but I should doubt if its any better than a hamerelli or a beretta competition sport models - for me i'm coming up on50 YEARS of shooting- as an aside I've shot the rws eley competition "sport"- yea, the 50 bux for 50 rounds stuff back in the 80s and it actually shot WORSE than winny dynapoints- just goes to show you it's a combination- shooter or rest, gun, and AMMO plus alt, humidity wind direction - when you use a heavier slug you can eliminate a good deal of those variables
Well, I'll let you or someone with deeper pockets work out the variances. I'd like to see the final result from the jury.
Range brass and 147 grs 9mm's is where I ended up.

Hey - I've bought dies in a calibre I didn't load for - yet. That was coming and the dies showed up at a good price. SOP for GunNutz everywhere.

That I do! And my wife, being a GunNut herself, aids & abets me in my affliction. We are a co-dependent pair.

I have also worked the bugs out of a rifle, sold it and bought it back, or one similar and started the process again. One of the gun rags did a piece entitled:

"You might be a rifle/pistol loony if ....." and listed 10 things, ALL of which I had done at one time or another. If you hadn't done at least half of them, you started shooting yesterday.

The gun, shooter, and quality ammunition is accurate. 45acp is not inherently the most accurate round, there are just a lot of quality pistols made in 45acp.

Really the most accurate is the 7.5 Fk....:nest:

Other than a new production Auto Mag, that is at the top of the want list. Not too fussed about its accuracy potential.
