Is 7.62 VZ58 a viable option for 2Gun / 3Gun?

An SKS can be run, but it is not a great option for tac rifle/multigun... I've seen some guys VERY fast with stripper clips, but they still get left in the dust on mag changes, especially when you start talking about using LAR15/XCR pistol mags.

I run tac rifle and multigun matches in GVRD and Fraser Valley, and the Vz has all but disappeared from the sporting landscape. I think there are a number of reasons: there are few great RDS/scope mounting options, the mag changes are slower no matter how much you practice your Spetznatz mag changes, and there are no good pistol mag options.

7.62x39 ARs are a poor choice IMHO... I use one for practice, but not for competition. I had to put heavy hammer springs in my x39 AR to ensure it would shoot hard milsurp primers. This makes the trigger pull HEAVY, certainly much heavier than the Geisselle SSA-E I have in my 5.56mm AR I generally use. There is also noticeably more recoil with x39, so my double-taps open up from almost touching to 3-4 inch spread.

The XCR-L is the only x39 rifles that perform well at tac matches, though it seems as the ones that run well are great, and the ones that don't are terrible.

I am wondering how the Type-81 will be for 2/3 gun use as it is way lighter rifle than a SKS etc?? I guess we will soon hear about it and the reports from Pers... Cant wait to hear.

Just can't think on one good reason to use 7.62x39 over .223...

'Can think of a few reasons NOT to, but... go ahead.
 
I used a Vz last year. Switched to a 7.62x39 AR this year. I did it because of the LAR mags tbh. I had no issues with the side mounted scope on the Vz, it was the multiple mag changes I wanted to overcome.
I've had no issues with FTF with my Spikes Tactical Lower-PSA Upper (bought all assembled on EE). I have had some issues with FTF with certain magazines, so unfortunately I still don't run with all 10 rounds as I break those mags in.

I was wife-blocked from getting a 556 upper because she didn't want another stack of crates in a new caliber in the basement... for me that was the barrier.
 
I used mine for a CQB match this year. The match limits rifle to 5 rounds per magazines no matter what magazines are used because part of the game is about mag changes.

I finished 9 out of 50. Top score being 1233, my score being 1103 and all my points being lost due to my pistol shooting (which I'll work on for next event).

Anyway, there is a stage called "mad minute" which consist in dumping 4 magazines in 15 seconds at 20m. Well, a lot of guys running ARs couldnt get all rounds out in 15 seconds. And both time I was able to do it with some time to spare. All I use is an extended mag release from DLASK. So mag change speed is hardly a factor.

VZ58 is a good platform for Tac Match/2guns/CQB. 3guns is doable but you wont be as competitive as the race gun/spandex wearing competitors since some stage often call for 60 rifle rounds (12 mags).

If having fun and doing things differently while getting a good challenge, go ahead with this great platform. If winning is all you care about, pimped out AR is the way.

If the difference in cost between. 223 and 7.62x39 is the rational used... to either buy a different rifle or convert one... You probably really can't afford to shoot in the first place.
The cheap ammo tends to be steel core, so... Poof goes the savings if you ever shoot where steel core ammo isn'the permitted

Is getting a new wife and a 556 upper a possibility?
 
You can use a Combloc gun like a SKS, t81, vz58 etc. It will be fun, and if ur buying ur .223 ammo, 7.62 will be half the price to shoot if ur allowed to shoot steel core. Just don't expect to keep up with the 10rnd guys. Muzzle jump is an issue with 7.62 as well
