Is a 1911 practical in 9mm?

I would really like a 1911 in 9mm. Anything 1911 is awesome! I've been playing with a buddy's Kimber Stainless Target in 9mm and I like it alot. Although the one thing I found was the recoil was really buttery... almost slow? Not sure if this is normal for a 9mm 1911.

If the ejection is spotty you can always swap for a lighter recoil spring but if the ejection is consistent with no FTEs then you're good to go.

If you are shooting light target reloads that might explain why they seem a little anemic. However, how fast does a bullet have to be going to put a hole in a piece of paper?

I have a Kimber stainless and a dozen mags to go with it. One of the nicest out of the box pistols I've ever owned. Typical kimber Quallity outstanding fit & finish, great trigger and economical to shoot....Now if I can just get my girl to let me use it more(she takes it over at the range),she loves it as well. Guess I better just buy another pistol for me. I was considering an STI but I think I will likely go with what I know.

I have both STI Spartans one in 45 ACP and the other in 9mm. I love them both but there is no doubt that the 9mm is nicer to shoot and a lot cheaper as well.

How are the triggers on the STI single stacks?
The rest of the pistols look great and I'm sure typical STI quallity, but are the triggers as nice as Kimbers or have I just been lucky and got good ones. The spartan specifically has caught my interest

The triggers on my two guns are very good right out of the box. The 9mm is a little nicer then the 45.

We all love the 1911 45 ACP but....high cost of ammo makes it almost prohibitive for me to shoot even my own reloads. (truth is, reloads is all I shoot in any caliber) Commercial bullets (heads) are 130/1000 for 45s vs. 751000 for 9mm.

Wow! Where are you getting bullets at those prices?

I pay $110/1000 in 9mm and $80/500 in 45 !

Are you talking jacketed, plated or cast? If you're looking for reasonably priced cast bullets try Rick Pearson of R&R Bullets.

Rick Pearson
P.O. Box 305

He's in eastern Ontario but occasionally makes trips down to the Golden Horsehoe when he has a large order to deliver. Some sample prices are as follows:
9mm - under 145 gr. $65/1000 + HST
40 - under 180 gr. $75/1000 + HST
45 - under 230 gr. $80/1000 + HST

He's a little slow because he does a lot of casting out of two cavity moulds but he has a pretty good selection & is a good guy to deal with.

Catalog is here: ht tp://ovpl.ca/R-R_Bullets.pdf

The STI Trojan in 9MM I own has been 100% reliable and with a magwell and 10 rd mags runs like a clock in ESP for IDPA. Great gun.

The Norinco NP 29 I used to own was reliable as well just not quite as well finished off and by the time I added all the goodies such as decent sights and a trigger job I wasn't that far off the price of the Trojan.

Take Care

and people thought i was mad for not minding a 1911 with rails.
a 1911 in 9mm is really just a neutered 1911 lol

I've had three (3) different 1911s in 9mm (STI, Colt and Norinco). None of them were particularly reliable, and all of them were extremely picky about their ammo. There's something about the ultra steep feed ramp that makes the 9mm 1911 a tough gun to keep from jamming. To anyone who has had good luck with one, count your blessings :)

I have had 2 9mm STIs over the years, a Ranger II and a Spartan. Both were utterly reliable. Now I only ever used Tripp Research 10-round 9mm mags, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it... But I honestly never had a feeding problem with either, and the Ranger II must have had at least 8 or 9 thousand rounds through it...

For me the issue was: "Not another caliber please".

I used to have pistols in .40, 9mm, .38spl, .22lr, and 7.62x25

The thought of getting one in .45acp was just too much for me to stomach. Eventually I sold everything except my SP-01 tactical, and if I get another handgun it will be in 9mm unless it's a revolver.
