The .22 is only sufficient if you accompanied by a PH with a proper stopping rifle, in case of a charge. It is marginal, and requires the patience and dedication to wait for the perfect broadside shot, and the willingness to pass on the shot if a proper presentation is not offered.

(It always sounds so silly when the big-animal/small-gun guys use this tired line of horses**t to justify their use of .243's on moose, etc....but now I've found the appropriate use for this foolish reasoning: sarcasm!)

Ya gotta know that sooner or later some expert is going to say nothing less than a .338 Lapua. :D And if we are able to switch to "siksik defence" mode, well, just break out the popcorn:popCorn:

338 is a little much but a 300 mag is just about right. It can be done with a smaller round but nothing less that a 120 gr bullet.

Wow that was hard to type with a straight face. .22lr is more that enough. I have used .22s and they work great.

I've been charged by these fearsome critters. Ask Berital about how we narrowly escaped with our lives. Now I always carry enough gun.

Maybe best to use the holy hand grenade of Antiock to snuff it.Or a 17 hmr just to be different.22 rimfire if you want to be practical.

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits,

And this:

Oh, how I lol'd. ha:

Better make sure its not push feed. I hate it when I am hunting in the hot African (or Albertan) sun, holding my rifle upside down and short stroking the bolt and it jams.
It could be downright dangerous.

I recall seeing a video of a well prepared individual who had the bayonet on his SKS ready...he was most likely charged by a wounded gopher so he went to the spike for self preservation.
Held it up for the camera and then cleared it by firing an additional round. Obviously a brave and skilled hunter.
Watching it twisting around made a chill run through my heart. A close call...

The sarcasm font be real heavy on this one

I'm thinking of reloading some 30 cal FMJ 170 gr's and shooooost some siksik's with my 700 Remington ... what do you think? HAHA :D
