Is a .375 H & H too much cartridge for moose

I use 375 exclusively. To me a 1000 lbs animal deserves a matching size cartridge.

I am sure many people catch salmon and musky with their spinning rods every year, but if I am looking for a dedicated salmon rod, I would look for a suitable size one for the prey I am after.

Let us be honest: although I do not need a new rifle, I feel like getting one. My current rifle battery is as follows: Winchester 490 in .22LR; Mauser 96 in 6.5X55; German Voere Shikar in 30-06; and T/C Encore in .50X209 muzzleloader. The Ruger #1 tropical in .375 H & H has caught my eye. I do not plan on going to Africa; although one never knows what the future may have in store. That new rifle would be for moose hunting. Hence the question: is it too much gun for that application?

In case anybody wonders: I do reload. Therefore the cost and availability of ammunition are non-issues. And also, I have no need for (nor do I desire) anything in between the .22 LR and the 6.5X55. I am essentially looking at getting something bigger than the 30-06. If anyone believes that some other cartridge would be better suited, please explain why. And please let us not turn this into a debate about the virtues of the .375 Ruger over the other .375 cartridges. FWIW, I have read those threads.

Did you ever get your 375 Tropical #1?

375 the perfect alround cartridge. i wouldn't want one if i had to buy store bought but as your a reloader its a fun gun to shoot. recoil is suprisingly mild.

For us reloader folks, the .375 H&H is a super versatile cartridge for both plinking & hunting. I woulda kept
my Browning Stalker, but stainless & plastic don't suit my tastes all that well. That rifle routinely put sub-sonic
270 gr. Speers into 1" at 100 yds.

At 1050 fps., that load had no problem passing through the deer in my neck of the woods at that distance.
An upside to using this load is yer not freakin' out nearby folks with a big kaboom.

If I were to go for moose, I would load a hardcast 265 gr. RNFP boolit at 1400 fps. and take the bugger within 100 yds. with 'er.:)

Well I have taken animals from this size...................

to this size with a 375 H&H............so you decide..........

It's a pretty universal cartridge for anything from 30 lbs to 5000 lbs, pretty sure you could wedge a moose in between there somewhere.

I used the same load with a 270 TSX for all my critters.

A couple of my friends use .375 H&H for everything from deer to grizzly,...no issues!

I'd like to. see that claim. Moose are the biggest pussies of the deer kingdom.

Not compared to barren ground caribou. Caribou are so happy to be taken out of a world of flies and wolves that they'll give up the ghost if shot in the hoof with a .222. They've been know to surround snowmobiles in hopes they're the ones harvested with a rifle. Moose are tanks compared to caribou.:D

Unlike some, I don't care which flavor of .375 you choose, I like em all, from the .375 Scovile to the .378 Weatherby; yes Ted, that includes the 9.3X62 too.
But choosing a .375 comes with an inherent danger, provided you choose a good rifle, you might stop using your other standard hunting rifles all together! The .375 cartridges are that good.

Some guys on this site use the 375H&H for everything....it's a fun round, buy it!! As long as you can shoot the gun well and comfortably, there is no such thing as "too much gun". IMHO anyway

I agree. Although in my experience it doesn't take much to take down a Moose and I know a guy who regularly shoots moose with a .243... Shoot whatever caliber makes you happy...
