Is it legal to own a .458 socom

Why a bolt action when you can have it in a NR semi?

Sure, providing that you're willing to believe that everyone doing so has the financial means and is up to the challenge of being a beta tester.

For some, the cost of the base rifle and the conversion is prohibitive. Some people don't have the reloading experience needed to develop a load that will actually cycle the rifle reliably 100% of the time without over gassing the gun and developing reliability issues or possible damage to the rifle itself. Diagnosing problems and potential issues may not be a person's strong suit either.

Doing a conversion on a bolt gun or break action, for example, will reduce a great deal of the complexities involved and will be far less demanding of the end user as a result.

The OP can do what he chooses but doing so doesn't mean it will be successful.

I belive I can show that it works very well so beta testing not really required.

284 win is the parent case so a bolt/single shot rifle in that caliber might be a good place to start given the unusual rebated case if that is what someone wants

I'm glad to hear your's is working out, however, a sample of (1) doesn't indicate any guarantee of success. It's still very much a gamble.
True, mine was the first frt entry of it's kind, but there are regular AR's available from factory in 450 bushmaster that work. I'm not sure/too lazy to check if the OP had to have NR or not
