Is it too early to dream about Gopher season?

I'm not a 10/22 fan, but if it's OK to shoot something like CCI MiniMags...I don't think many will survive a a direct hit from one of those. lol I use CCI Blazer solids I run through a Waltz die to really open them up. They really open GOPHERS up as a result. Inexpensive 22 as well, but a bit of a chore to put gopher-quantities of them through that die.

Thats funny you pick those two rounds, cause they are the ones Im stocking up on right now. :)

These days I find it hard to pick up one of my .22's for gophers, my .17hmr is just way too much fun, and this year a built .223 will be joining in, the .22 well it's reserved for when I have to shoot close to horses at the one farm I clean up gophers for.

I find it easier to take the 22 out. Just looking at the cost of hmr ammo is enough for me to park my rifle. I used my 6x45 a bit last year and it's the same price as hmr but sends 80gr bullets at almost 3000fps.

There haven't been big numbers of gophers here for a while so I just shoot my 204 mostly. Also my 22-250 and 223. I reload for all and at the price of 22lr these days I'm not spending all that much more.

With the price of .22LR? 7 cents a round is close to the same price as your .223? Please enlighten me on where to get .223 for even 25 cents a round.

^I get where Collint is coming from. Without a many gophers around, why not have a little more explosive action with the centerfires. :) The highest I've paid for .224 bullets was $34.99 a hundred, so after tax here in Ontario, that's about $0.40 a bullet, +primer + powder. I consider myself lucky if my .223 hand loads are in the $0.65-$0.75 range but hey...the groundhogs are worth it! :) Here, a banner day is shooting about 6-8 groundhogs so cost-per-round is no concern. If I was living out west instead of traveling there to shoot gophers...I'd probably stick with the .22/17HMR...but add a progressive press to the mix. At that point, it would make more sense to buy bullets 500 at a time, powder 8lbs. at a time, etc. A little more $ value out when I want to stretch things out a little.

Not comparing price per round really. If you only shoot 30 rounds that day who cares. Makes a big splat too. Like a poor mans prairie dog hunt.

I have never been gopher hunting. Something on my bucket list. Target rich, feedback from every shot. Takes me back to infantry squad days. ####, said too much...

Not "hunting". It's shooting! :p. Just kidding you! Typical conversation between two Sask good old boys - "Hey Joe, what you up to these days?" "Well, Fred and I were over near Mankota for a couple of days shootin' gophers."

Nothing better than a good gopher shoot. A few years back, I found a little field in Manitoba that took two days of shooting to get it tamed down. I used a 12 ga. in that field as well as a .22. :d

12's are messy. Gophers in BC are a little too cagey to use it.

I don't think 12s are that messy, certainly not with shot in the #6-#7-1/2" range. Instant effect, but it makes their fur just look matted. Took us 325 shots through a couple of Mossbergs to confirm though. lol

Messy=.223 with Hornady V-Max bullets. I'm 100% cool with making gopher shoots about 99% 22lr...but my buddy brought his SAKO 85 Varmint down last year with a big box of hand loads...big Swarovski scope on the rifle, etc. The 85s set trigger, the clarity of the glass, low recoiling .223....well, it was like watching artillery strikes on gophers in HD.

I am looking for work in AB~enough of this Ontario business. lol
