Is it worth it to own a handgun in Canada?

I hear you... I have close to 200 firearms and around 50 of those are handguns. Every time I buy a handgun, I ask myself that very question and begin to have buyer's remorse. I hate that feeling so I took a few steps to avoid the guilt, one measure being, buying less expensive guns. For example, I have a CZ 75, a Shadow 1 and Shadow 2 and instead of purchasing an 85b to round out my collection, I picked up a Norinco NZ85b at about a third of the price. While I was at it, I also picked up a NP29, an NP22 and a Zastava m70a. I asked myself if I needed another 1911 or Tokerav and the answer is no, or at lease not in 7.62x25. These last 4 pistols I purchased, combined, cost less than my two tone Sig 1911.

.22 pistols are also cheap. My point is that if you buy inexpensive restricted firearms, you will still question the validity of owning one but I can gaurentee that you will not feel as bad or question it as much as if you bought an expensive one. I wish someone told me that when I started collecting.

If you live in any of the larger centres, chances are you’ll do most of your shooting at a range anyway, and some ranges are restricted to pistol calibers... makes a handgun just as useful as any other gun.

OMG! Yes it is worth it.
Undoubtedly and without reservation.

Pistols, revolvers and BP hand cannons.... all worth it. So much fun and joy. Everyone has their own tastes. Black powder revolvers have the most soul. The most fun. The most class. The most romance. ###y sweaty passionate goodness.
Modern cartridge revolvers are lovely. My personal fav for convenience and glory.
Modern pistols are amazingly tactical practical. Imminently capable, but ...from personal experience missing soul. Do you have purpose, or is it joy you seek?
Temet nosce...know thyself.

I found myself by renting everything at US ranges. Everything. I KNOW what I like and what I don't because I got to play with tons ' o goodies.. Gun tourism is totally worthwhile. I recommend Texas, Virginia and Tennessee for fun...

Yes, very worth it!

I enjoy the challenge of shooting a gun that has a short sight radius. Having sights only 5" from front to back means ANY deviation has significant differences on target. (e.g. if the front sight sits 1-2 mm higher in the rear sight than your last shot) the bullets point of impact can be several inches different. Handguns are also much harder to hold steady than a rifle. It forces greater concentration to shoot well. Consistency is everything in handgun shooting.

Go out and buy one.....if you are on the fence.....grab a sw9 ve they are like 299$ with 2 mags....even cheaper on EE....300$ doesn't buy me dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant these days

I joined the range first so I could shoot rifles inside in the winter. Later bought one pistol.

I pay $500 a year range fee to shoot that $400 gun legally.

I prefer shooting rifles but wanted the pistol purely as an expression of the exercising of my legal privileges.

I love mine. Buy one good one and have fun.

Is awsome packing up a small box rather then giant case to the range. I can carry all my range stuff in one trip when shooting handguns with ease.

Yes it sure is! I definitely enjoy using my rifles and shotguns. However the pistols are a different experience. Especially in competitive shooting like IDPA/IPSC as others have mentioned. Drawing from a holster, magazine drops and reloads on the move, so much fun!!
