Is it worth while to have choke tubes in a 14" 870 general purpose shotgun?

I just received my HP9-1 870 copy. Got her all degreased and oiled up and the range test is planned for this weekend :)

If this is used as a camp gun, truck gun, occassional partridge/bunny gun, busting clays with friends, would it be worthwhile to have the barrel threaded so that it can accept Remington chokes?

How about rifled chokes, would it improve the accuracy or is it just a waste of money?

I'm planning on having a gunsmith install Wilson Trac-Locs on her next week so if choke tubes are worthwhile, I'll get him to thread the barrel at the same time.

Personally, I think yes.

Especially if you are going to be using for things other than slugs. A choke option lets you use it more effectively for hunting. In fact, when I get another 14" (just traded mine for an Elcan!) I'm going to have it fitted with Rem Chokes.

Definitely.
The Cylinder bore short barrel is carry over from the "old days" when people thought short shotguns were for spray and pray type useage at very close distance (e.g. room-length).

You want a Modified Choke to be a genuine do-it-all multi purpose shotgun. Definitely worth it. I got the option on my 12.5" barrel and I don't regret it at all.

P.S. You can shoot anything (buckshot, slugs) through a Modified choke - In fact you get better accuracy when using a choke and effective range.

Yeah, I think it is roughly $90'ish to thread a barrel for chokes.
Chokes cost roughly $26'ish for your typical Remington choke to $55'ish for a tooless Remington choke (its extended and you use your thumb to tighten or remove it).

It's an extra cost for sure... but definitely makes it more useful (you could actually hunt with it - rather than it being a defense only shotgun) :)

That I could not answer... best to bring it in to someone who does the work and they can tell you if their is enough material there to do it. :)
