Is long range hunting ethical and fair chase?

What troubles me is we never hear about the misses at long range with their 300PRC chambered rifle ,$4,000 scope and Smart phoned linked Kestrel device.
we don't hear about the close range gut shot where the animal was chased for hours before being dispatched either, but the evidence is clear as to how many mistakes are made each year at all ranges when you visit the meat processor and it's not pretty

Very few new normal range hunting cartridges being brought to market. Lots of long range fast twist stuff though. Giving the market what they want. The ability to pretend to be a sniper.

I think B&C is trying to find the line between shooting (long range or not) and hunting. Of course you can’t successfully kill on a hunt without a shot. However you can shoot without actually hunting. As in a range with targets. But when you substitute the targets with animals it is the opinion that it isn’t hunting. Like gopher shooting isn’t gopher hunting. Unless you make it such. With different effort and attitude. Does the size or quantity of the animal determine how much you respect it? Often not for some. Is the animal or the shot the trophy/memory? It obviously would be nice if it were both.

B&C sets the rules for admission in to their book, it is as simple as that. If you want your name in their book you have to play by their rules. I hunt for food, not to appease the gatekeepers of what trophy can be printed in a book for trophy hunters to see.

B&C put it in writing. Of course everyone acts on their own accord. Even if it is the bible, lots follow a different religion. It was an example that’s all.

What is your point? You are moving away from hunting now and attempting to make fun of people that shoot long range.

This question is kind of odd.

So one hunter sucks at shooting and has to get within 50m to even hit is target and the other hunter is not overly quiet but can hit a pop can at 500m every shot so he shoots from 500m and doesn't worry about the sound.

Hunting can be going in the woods and sneaking up on animals for fun or see how close you can get or it can be putting meat in the freezer.

Both scenarios both people are hunters hunting for different reasons. One is hunting for food and the other is for a challenge

Also a sheep at 400m could be a normal shot but a white tail at 400m is too far?

I completely agree with them. Hunting is getting as close to your quarry as possible by using hunting skills to do so such as playing the wind, using available cover, patterning and anticipating their next move and possibly scent, calls, decoys and bait to lure them to you. Scouting and finding trails, bedding areas and where they’re feeding to determine the best point of ambush.

Shooting an animal at 700 yards requires literally zero hunting skill. None whatsoever. It does require good equipment, practice and skill though. Nobody is arguing that. If you want to show off your shooting skills, do it at the range on paper targets. It’s completely selfish to intentionally create a scenario where you’re really lowering the chances of a good hit and greatly increasing the risk of wounding an animal. That is not what a hunter does.
I'll be sure to send you the video of my next 700x2 yard kill for you to reeee over.

Well any damn hunter that shoots a deer at over 75 yards is a damn fool.....so said Dan'l Boone in 1840 and then someone invented a rifled barrel and boys were killing stuff out to 100 yards and it became ethical....then someone invented a scope and killing things at 200 yards or more started to happen and then that became ethical....then multi powered scopes were invented and 5-700 yard shots happened and became ethical....now with the recent turret markings being invented shots over 1000 yards are ethical...it,s just "progress"

This is more from B&C. I think it is often forgotten but imo applicable.
Those who cherish hunting, for themselves and for future generations, understand that hunting is a privilege to be recognized, cherished, and maintained by today’s hunters through deeds to benefit wildlife and through establishment and adherence to standards of fair chase. Those who cherish the hunting tradition must therefore, always, strive to “see ourselves as others see us.” The future of hunting and wildlife conservation hangs in the balance.
