is synthetic engine oil ok for gun lub??

Yes, dont drink the ATF, or any oil that isn't vegetable or animal based. You probably shouldn't lick your guns either. What's your point? Wd40 is a water displacement product, not a lubricant, it doesn't work as seasoning either.:p

It does ;) , however :nest: , make for an excellent air-freshener/fragrance....:D

I use mobile 1 auto transmission fluid on my firearms. Goes on thin. Still on the surface after a good range session 500-600 rounds fired.

Around 10 bucks for a quart. I apply using a qtip and the bottle is still quite full after a year.

I sometimes use g96 clp on my ars

On another forum I used to visit I remember a guy going on about how the Iraqis he worked with would use motor on their AKs.

Myself, I use Jetlube AP-5 on my AR and it works great. The best part is most of the fouling seems to get trapped in the grease so cleaning is fairly easy. I've had my AR out in -25 ish and I haven't run into any problems yet.

I prefer grease over oil! If I had to use oil it would be Mobil 1 Delvac 5w40 Synthetic Diesel Oil.

I use grease, the best there is, Mobil 462 XHP Moly.

Yes
grease if it slides, oil if if pivots!

This is often said and often incorrect.

There are a number of applications where pivots and rotating parts use grease. There are a number of applications where oil is used on sliding parts. The consideration is the design factors.

Generally speaking grease is used in open environments such as hydraulic cylinder pivots and in select closed environments, such as wheel bearings. Oil is usually used in closed environments with some means of moving the oil to the surfaces needing to be lubricated.

Yes.

When I was a serious drag racer we tested Mobil1 synthetic vs all other conventional on the dyno. Mobil1 always generated more power. Always. Sometimes 3 horsepower, sometime 25 horsepwer.

That means less friction. Period. I don't care if it's sliding or rotating. Tell a 1,400 HP naturally aspirated Pro-Stock engine that grease applied at some areas will make more power.

I can't suggest you using synthetic oil to clean your gun, but to lube it? God damn rights. -60 degrees to + 60 degrees, synthetic is better.

My dear old dad laughed when I showed him a brand new $10 bottle of super duper gun oil. He claimed a good quality engine oil was every bit as good as any premium gun oil and explained why (pressures, temperatures, RPM, and duration between oil changes in an automotive engine). As he had been a chemical engineer, , tanker (1935-1938, 1939-1944) and firearms instructor (1944-45) I trusted him. I've used synthetic motor oil on guns (and motorcycles and cars) for over twenty years now and it works great! Where applicable use grease but everywheres else use synthetic motor oil. One guy in the club is an instrument mechanic and he also uses synthetic motor oil. It works great!

Just about any lube will be Ok for a gun. Some will be better, some worse. For ARs, keep em sloppy wet and well lubed.
Viscous synthetic oil or light greases work fine (depending on your ambient temperatures!)
