If you want to see true craftsmanship and quality take a look at German made M98's. South American contracts such as the Brazilian 1908, Argentine 1909, and Peruvian 1909 when in mint condition are absolutely amazing. Pre and early war K98k's including the Port contract ones are also spectacular rifles with an attention to detail not seen on any other military rifles. Some Czech made ones like the Persian contracts are also works of art.

The Yugo M48's are fine rifles but lack the fit and finish of other M98's.

I recently just sold an M48A that was in basically unissued condition.

I would say it is nowhere the manufacturing quality of my 1926 VZ-24.

Yes, the Steyr made Chilean 98's are nicely made as well. Too bad mint unissued examples aren't available. I bet they would be spectacular.

With that said, they're very well made. Fit and finish won't be the best you can get, but if you just want a shooter it's a good option.

On the plus side, I think they are probably better than most Mausers you can find today, seeing as most were surplussed in new, or nearly new condition, and they weren't built using random parts from a stack of neglected surrendered rifles of various makes.

I always thought the Brazilian Model 1935 was the zenith of Mauser 98 type rifles.

Still a 98 but an intermediate length action. My vote for quality goes for pre war German production or Czech VZ24, vz33.

Because it is an intermediate length action, a lot of parts won't fit but by design, it's basically a 98. Other than the length, they are pretty much identical.

If you want to see a nice Yugo Mauser get a M24/47. FN model 1924s are excellent Mausers.

A mint 1905 and 1935 are equal to a very high level commercial rifle. M48 is an entry level rifle.
