Is the 7,62x39 ELK capable ?

if I could see the whites of thier eyeballs with the iron sights maybe hehehe
In reality the 7.62 x 39 with the right bullet will kill pretty much anything that walks in north america inside 100M but the shooter better be real good with follow up shots.
wouldn't be on my list of Elk ammo but I don't have a whole lot of experience with killing elk as I have only killed one. That took one 160gr nosler partition to the heart with a 7mm rem mag at about 150M and it travelled another 50M after the shot.

If you’re close enough and shot placement is right and the bullet is a quality one then I’m sure it would do the job, are there better choices? I’m sure there are, but sometimes you use what’s in your hands if the conditions are right.

If a 22 WMR will kill a moose, then I'm sure the 7.62x39 would do an elk in.
Close up, proper bullet placed in the elk properly = dead elk.
It would definitely NOT be my first choice to hunt elk with, however. Dave.

I’m sure it can kill them, just a matter of how long it takes

i dont know about this one ..... lol.

What makes ya say this?

yeah a Can o worms- but i mean, Cowboy guns an Cast projectiles are in use.

the 30-30 would of done it :)

figures from the 30-30 are often from 24 tubed guns, used in the popular model 94 with 20 inch , the ballistics are on close to a handloaded 150gr 762x39 round , almost anything is more productive than a 150/170gr FN varient when we think Spitzers..

one thing i like is the points of view from others. its not as though we asked if the 762 can drop an elk on the spot at 650meters now...

its more asking, If, if can be used on elk, is it Capable..

i already know the Answer...... since anyone ever poked an arrow into any critter ever, then that means it will die from a 7.62x39 :D

cheers though.

An elk is much more animal than a whitetail or a mulie. They aren't necessarily massively muscled like a water buffalo, but an elk has stamina. Not as big as a moose, but when you've got one on the ground it is the size of a horse.

Unless you are a crackshot and an excellent stalker, start with more gun. In my hunting party's experience a .308 was the least gun anyone carried.

I know of a particular elk that took a 154 grain Wolf 7.62x39 soft point to the front shoulders and how that bullet plowed out the far side and dropped the elk. The range was short and the elk expired promptly. I didn't fire the shot. But it certainly did the job. Would I reach for for that combo in elk season? No chance. I will tote my .338 RUM or a 9.3x62. There just aren't too many circumstances where I would find myself in the elk woods with a 7.62x39.

cant believe you have shot penguins.... altho your choice of SST is proberly perfect for it.

not mine for mooselks

oh man the Alberta penguins are vicious little creatures almost as vicious as Saskatchewan woodland seals !

I said the SST because those are pretty much the only premium bullet I have ever seen in 7.62x39 I have a couple boxes of hornady black so that was what i was referencing and ya for a 100 or 150 yard shot a 30 cal bullet is more than enough for elkmoose, penguins or manbearpigs

For me it is a hard NO. It’s not even in the range of calibers I would consider. Elk are very hardy animals and if you don’t punch their ticket they can go 10 miles wounded fatally but not yet bled out. It might work, for me I chose something that Will work not something that might work some of the time.
