Is the 7,62x39 ELK capable ?

What say You who have used the 7.62 a fair bit ??

Elk capable ?

what rounds?

good formula for elk/moose would be .25 sd bullet landing about 2000 fps or above for most situations, in rapid expanding construction landing as low as 1800 fps

always start with the bullet, then figure out what will drive the bullet to the speeds you want, since you're starting with the cartridge you're likely going to have limited options and range for the game intended, I believe most bullets for the 7.62x39 are .2 sd range (deer size game) and speeds pretty sad so range will be very limited with a marginal bullet penetration potential

best option might be to rebarrel to 6.5 Grendel ;), you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig, you can't make the 7.62x39 into something it's not

You can kill big critters with any number of small case capacity cartridges, I know of more than a few trappers that do it . However, for myself , I can pick and choose a rifle and cartridge of sufficient accuracy and energy of my choosing , so I don't entertain the though of small cartridges for bigger animals .

We r about to start seeing Velvet Bucks strip soon, then i will ramp up my chase, ill be without doubt toting the 7.62x39 for the Fallow Deer up until the Rut in April.
ill be jumping ship over to New Zealand so wont get to do any Rut hunting with the little x39 , although it really is a perfect FALLOW cartridge (small whitetail size)

an ive shelved the idea of carting it for the Big Deer on purpose, as Cat mentions ill tote a more suitable insurance policy , but i am confident enough in placing a shot if needed for the bigger deer- although still not confident for the Large Stags
