Is the benelli m4 still "the" shotgun to get?

What's the 5.9 tube? I take it that's what it comes with, and when you add the S&J extension you get 6+1+1 of 2 3/4" shells?

The 5.9 IS the S&J extension, which allows you to run the full legal capacity, which is 5 (almost but not quite 6) rounds of 3". If 6 rounds of 2 3/4 happen to fit in the tube, that's just an unintended consequence, and acceptable as per RCMP interpretation. I would not tell people that I put the extension on with the sole purpose of exceeding the 5 round semi auto rule. I always carried some 3 inch shells with me in case I was called out on this.

The magazine must not hold more than 5 rounds of the ammunition the gun is chambered for. If the gun says "12 gauge 3 inch shells" it's irrelevant how many 2 3/4 inch shells it holds - same with 3 1/2 inch chambered guns. This is even more clearly spelled out than the pistol magazine in rifles regulation, no need to carry 3 inch shells.

Thanks for the info, fellas.

On a side note, I haven't been able to hang-out on cgn for the last month because of life... and viewing this thread last night made me impulse buy an M4.

(I just sold my house. You're supposed to spend your house money on guns... riiight? lol)

You have more faith in the authorities than I do. Even if you're ultimately vindicated by a LEO, your gun can be confiscated, banged up, dragged around, and held until they feel like returning it. What the law permits and what the intention of the law was are two different things, which is why you'll always get disapproving looks from fudds when dumping in excess of 5 rounds.

Well, I've gone ahead and ordered a shell carrier for my m4. Side armor sold their name, they are now called Asgard defense. It looks like a pretty slick system, the strength and advantages of a rigid sidesaddle, while being able to swap out the shell carrier like a Velcro system. I can't wait to get it!

No disapproving looks at a 3 gun match!

Very cool. When you get it, please post pics and your thoughts on the system.

Well, so at least it had made it to the country, it is with CBSA. I'm sure they'll open the package to ensure it isn't a fully automatic capable rail/prohibited device. Hopefully they won't waste too much of their time on it before they send it on through to me.

Benelli M4 is still my favorite 12. Needs some mods to improve from stock but...

- Extended mag tube (5.9 rounds of 3" is totally legal)
- Oversized Safety
- Oversized bolt handle
- GG&G bolt release ($$ but awesome - drill/tap ones work too!)
- Scalarworks RMR mount (co-witness with irons)
- Field Stock - the collapsable is cool as eff, but I shoot better with traditional stock style.

Once you have all that - THEN you have the ultimate 12g. :)

Semi automatic guns have round limits your confused with pump action. 5.9 3 inch........ is how many 2 3/4 plus a ghost load

6 in the tube, one on the lifter, one in the chamber. 8 rounds of 2 3/4" - totally legal.

As long as only 5 of the longest shell it's chambered for (3") - you're fine. One on the lifter is not in the mag.

I've never had any ammo related issues with my M4. However - it is NOT a fast cycling shotgun compared to say, an SX3 or Maxus. Those cycle much quicker.

The impulse of the M4 is more like a 'ker-CHUNK' - positive, reliable, and smooth - but 'fast' it is not. My opinion only.
