Is the BT99 still a solid choice for new shooters?

Hi folks!

I’m looking to get into trap shooting again shortly and am looking to be joining a new club shortly.

I did some trap shooting for almost a year many years ago with my Remington 870.

If I start back up I’ll probably just end up using the 870 again but am interested in getting a first trap shooting gun, and going off memory I remember the BT99 being a recommended gun for new shooters. Is this still the case?

The only reason I didn't buy a BT99 was I wanted to shoot doubles.

Yah, sporting clays can be tricky with the BT-99 as well. But it sure feels nice on singles.

Do you folks think I should spend a bit more money and go with the adjustable comb?

An adjustable comb enables a custom fit. If the gun you are looking at fits you well and there are no other shooters to accommodate there is no real advantage to an adjustable comb.

Only if the gun doesn't fit you. And if you find later that the gun doesn't fit you as well as you thought then you can always have an adjustable comb added afterward for about the same amount of money as the factory one.

Getting a O/U with two barrels and removeable chokes will allow you to play other games such as skeet, 5 stand, and sporting clays. A lot of folk, including me, lose interest in trap after trying the other disciplines.

As mentioned ata singles could become boring quickly especially with minimum shooters on the line
When i started shooting in the very early 70’s it was the sport even over skeet but that has all changed
Skeet and sporting clays would be my choice today

You could always buy one of those “strap-on” adjustable combs to try out

As solid as it gets for singles and handicap trap, most economical singles gun on the market
