Is the Marlin 795 any good?

Between all the ppl here vouching for the 795 and the $140 pricetag, i just pulled the trigger (haha pun intended) and ordered it from Cabelas. Even with their shipping and handling fees, the total out the door was still less than what a Savage 64 would cost pre-tax. Thanks guys, i just hope i don't end up with a lemon like TargetGuy did :p

mmatt, what did a set of the williams sights cost in the end? Also, what did you not like about the ati stock? I'm desparate for some peeps on my 60. I have it scoped right now because for some wierd reason the sight elevation runs out at 60 m, but I MUCH prefer open sights. The thing is just absolutely incredibly accurate. I might have to "pull the trigger" myself on those tech sights.

You wont be disappointed at that price regardless of your expectations.

BTW you must mean "...a lemon like TargetGuy did". I don't want people to think I "target" got a lemon. My Marlin 60 is excellent and I'm now considering a 795 for the collection as well.

I think the rear sight was $40 and the front $20. Shipped from the US, I'm pretty sure it came in under $80.

Call them and tell the that you want the WGRS-54 (rear sight) for the 795 and they'll tell you what front sight you'll need. They ship directly to Canada.

I must have read too fast the first time - I missed the bolded part.

I didn't mind the ATI stock. It was comfortable enough and looked kinda cool - but you have to permanently mod the 795 to use the stock as it's designed for the 60. You have to cut and reshape the trigger guard assembly. As long as you never plan on using the original stock again, go for it, but there's no going back once it's done.

Not hard to be better then a savage plastic stock. If I decide on a 795 a boyds it will be then

Savage plastic stocks scream "replace me!!" :) Zero temptation on the 795, the geometry is right, I dig the light weight, keeps it an inexpensive rifle, etc. For me anyway. If I upgrade mine now, it'll be for better optics. I think my Anschutz .22 deserves them more mind you, but having a pile of fun with the 795 these days.

where are you guys getting your spare magazines? Can't find them in the Pembroke area, Kingston, or Ottawa. Only place I have found them is cabela's but shipping is kind of steep (might just wait until spring and buy a few to make shipping worth it if I can't find them locally)

Does the 795 come in wood or do I have to get a boyds for it?

I was looking at getting a boyds rimfire target stock for my 795 but the length of the boyds I was looking at was disproportianately long, which would have left only a couple inches of the short barrel sticking out. If they made the stock a couple inches shorter it would have been a thing of beauty but its the same length stock you would put on a fullsize centerfire.

That sounds weird. I got one for my savage 93 looks really good on it. Not to long at all

"The forend is proportioned to compliment barrels 18-22 inches in length and can be opened up to accept customer barrels up to a diameter of 1 inch if desired"

Thats right form the boyds website

Here is my savage 93

I agree with .22LRGUY;

I have a Marlin 795 purchased just last year.Put a Simmons 3-9x32 wa/ao scope on it,grabbed a sample of every cartridge make I could find and headed for the range.Every brand shot so close to one ragged hole at 25yds that I had a hell of a time figuring out which brand of ammo it liked best.CCI mini mag HP's have the edge.
Couple of things though;
I had to get used to how light the gun is.
The scope has a tendency to slip in the dovetail.I didn't want to crank too hard on the mount so I took a sharp knife and scratched the paint out of the groove.No problem now.
The trigger could use some work.A lot of take up.

Hometownhero, the boyds looks nice on your savage, but the 795 only has an 18" barrel. I emailed boyds because the length seemed off and they confirmed it was the length listed.
