Is the Type 84 a good alternative to the AKM?

I can honestly say, after acquiring my Type 81, my Semi Auto AK fix has been filled. Now we just need a SVD alternative!

Personally speaking, I think T81 is a good rifle to add to your Red rifle collection even AKs were allowed. The finish is crude, so as other military production red rifles behind the iron curtain. I had a CZ858, it's fit and finish was not in par with my Vz58 from CSA.
My T81 folder is not bent, I do use leather and sandpaper to polish some of the parts. After all, it's a good alternative for an AK. Ps, It's coooooooool if our southern neighbor could not buy them. It works the other way around too....

I have a type 81 folder, and absolutely love it. It is not a pretty rifle like my CZ bolt guns. It will not shoot one ragged hole at 300m, and it is not a lego gun like my AR perfect for hanging the latest tacticool gee-gaws off.

It is a mule. Utterly dependable, completely reliable and accurate enough to get most tasks done. Use it, abuse it, drag it through the woods, bang it off door frames clearing the house for imaginary badguys and it will keep chugging. The ammo is cheap, and so are the mags (when they are in stock).

If the world were to go completely haywire it is the rifle I am grabbing on my way out the door.

So in short, yeah, it does what the AK does.

Shot a T81 folder and an SKS, at 80 yards with irons both hit a gong quite often when I did my part. My eyes work better with a scope though. Did not like the cheek weld with the T81 fixed stock, it was too high, the folder is way nicer to shoot and is handier.

One thing I noticed was the recoil impulse was way more comfortable than the SKS, not that the SKS is bad. Years ago had a AK 84S side folder, the T81 was very much the same feel. Personally, with the way it is designed and how tough the mags are, it would be my go to SHTF gun.

If you can find one, buy it, it is a fun cheap shooter that will be there for you if you need it.

Agreed, I went with the folder as I was much quicker getting a sight picture / cheek weld. The comb height on the fixed just didn’t seem to fit me. But it sure is pretty with that wooden stock.
