Is there a semi auto for me

of course, i'll have to disagree with you there- i've hunted with one most of my life, both isreali and norc, but i use a m-60 sling rigged fore and aft to distribute the weight- all up , with bipod and scope, it runs pretty close to 12 pounds- the 60 used run 22 or so- the "problem" if there is one, is not the weight, but the inability to handle 180 grain slugs- which is my go-to round-and jungle terrain is a lot more taxing than forest

Hasn't been my experience with the 7400, mine is quite accurate. The main problem is a loose screw on the end of the forearm.

I am fat, old, out of shape and a pussy. Where we hunt in Quebec, the underbush is thick and there is considerable walking to get to our spot.
12 pounds is damned heavy to drag along, and I would end up dropping it to avoid cardiac arrest. When I was 20 maybe. :cool:
 
it's only 4 pounds heavier than the standard hunting rifle- 7 or 8 pounds- add another pound or 2 for scope- that 12 isn't so far off my 338 bar- with a 4x12 x40 variable scope- normally i use the m14 for the camp gun- ie if you screw up and leave your ammo or gun or both or something happens to your gun you still won't be without- but for my own personal, it's a savage 99 with 180 grain slugs
that's in my scabbard- OR LET THE HORSE CARRY IT
as for my being in shape, i'm 55, 100 pounds over , but i won't concede the third one-

My go to rife is a Benelli R1 in 270WSM.
I have shot all the older and new Semis including the Browning Short and Long Tracs. The Benelli R1 in all the calibers I have sighted in for customers, 30-06, 300WinMag, 270 WSM and 300WSM is by far the most accurate and user friendly of the Semis out there today!
My Short Mag R-1 shoots MOA groups with factory ammo and sub MOA groups with handloaded 140 gr AB's which is what I use on everything.
I have made several one shot kills on Deer, Bear, Wolf and Coyote with this gun and hand rolled 140 AB's.
I have also had to make some quick follow up shots which the comfortech stock makes so easy that you can virtually see your bullet strikes through the scope!
I am just waiting to try some E-tips!
No contest on the best semi out there... Benelli R-1!
Don't sell the Brownings short though, they can be a close second with good ammo and detailed maintenance.

I wouldn't get a Rem 742. I have one and can get it to work with reloads not bad. I am told the rails are an issue in these guns and if it wasn't my wifes late fathers gun I wouldn't still have it. I hunted about 3 seasons with it and bought a bolt action and haven't looked back.
 
The 740 & 742 were designed for the guys who buy it, sight it in, fire 2-3 shots hunting every year, and hang it on the wall, (usually uncleaned, from all the one's I've seen!) Extensive shooting was not their purpose. Those slide rails are a bit soft, and when they're gone, you have a parts gun.

The older Brownings are a bit heavy, (steel recievers) the newer lightweights (Alloy recievers) seem ok. Haven't shot the new ones though to compare.

I have used a Remington 750 carbine in 30.06 for the last several years for deer/moose. Works fine for me, no complaints.

The Benelli is certainly nice too but I did not have the money for that one.

BAR, Benelli or Remington - all are nice pick the one you like and can afford and enjoy!
