Is there a semi auto for me

actions are actions...hunting is hunting. I'm SURE that some of you have run into situations where a faster second shot may have made a difference. I'm sure your first shot could have been better too...was it the action of your iron or you? I think this thread was started inquiring about semi's used ofr hunting. Not opinions about it in general....correct me if I'm wrong! On the same note, there used to be a fella in my town with an old .303....it had no front sight! He got deer every year with it AND if it was a situation that required 2nd or, 3rd shots, I'd defy any one in listening range to 'HEAR' if it was or was not a semi!

For semi's I've had luck with:

I LOVE my Ljungman AG-42B for how it works...I hate carrying it very far or through ANY sort of scrub...

I LOVE my father's Winchester Model 100 in .308. If I could find one [I can afford] I'd grab it without a moments hesitation

I've enjoyed shooting semi Remmingtons in both, .30-06 and .308 but, honestly prefer the ol' Model 100.... I would also really like to try the BAR or the HK...they're pricey and not too many close to me.

If you know a few different people with different toys, try them all, before buying anything ultimately it's you that'll pull the trigger.

I guess Formula 1 drivers can't handle the situation so thats why they have a clutchless paddle shift. Give your head a shake.......wonder if Tom Knapp could shoot as many clay birds with a pump.......not a chance.

I'm guessing by your level of offence you must one of the fudds who pulls out his rifle once a year but never really gets any good with it. If you shoot a semi just because your recoil sensitive a good muzzle break or sissy pad may help you. I'd be happy to give you some tips.

Apparently you need some skill at reading and comprehending what you read. Read my original post. Like I said lots of people buy a semi so they can blaze away without having to acquire much skill with a rifle.

My friend shoots just as good with his Browning Shorttrac .270WSM as anyone I've seen shoot a bolt action at the range.

To say that people who shoot auto-loaders are inbread ####tards is a pretty dickhole statement on your behalf.

Just sayin'...I'm not a semi-auto guy myself, but I don't go into someones thread and start talking smack on the subject...

Just for the record, I've been hunting for over 30 years. I 've never picked up semi auto and went in to the woods to hunt wth one. I shot 3 running deer with a lever a 99 and I had to reload it before they were all down, I was able to do this only because they were running east in front of me and when I shot the lead deer they turned west, then was able to shoot the other 2 running, they were going south over a ridge until he went down. I shot the big guy (#4) about 1min later with just enough time to load two rounds and put one into his liver while he was starring at his friends on the ground walking in front of me heading east on the side of a ridge. Where I hunt you don't usally get a chance like that or a chance to get a second shot if you miss, becasue we hunt the canadian shield and it' s generally thick ridgy terrain and it only takes the deer a second to disapper out of site with the wrong movement or sound over a rige or into a thicket of pine . So the reason for this post was not to "DIS" semi auto users but to get opinions on semi's that won't jam when you need them the most and make a recomendation to me. Because cycling a gun is not a problem for me.
And i'm sure other shooters have chosen to go with a semi for other reasons that what you have stated. So if you want to bash semi's and guys that use semi's do on your own post OK buddy boy.

Semi's are used lots by guys who don't have the mental faculties to work a bolt or lever under pressure. Not that I have anything against them, just the people who think they have to have one for follow-up shots. Even a fair rifleman can put just as many aimed shots through a bolt or lever gun as elmer fudd who's semi magnum blaster comes out 1 week before the season for "sight in" then goes back in the closet till next year.

I've had about 4 or 5 Win 100's, heard bad stories about them, they all worked well for me, not great groupers, nice wood - good lookers, didn't keep them too long, would buy another if the price was right, just cuz! Maybe cuz I wear a Winchester hat almost every day! Youngest son had BAR, worked very well for him, he liked it a lot, I'm betting they might be your best bet. Had a few Remington's (7400 & 742), they worked ok for me, heard bad things about them but didn't experience them. I'd say go shopping for a Browning BAR, price should be reasonable and should be a good s/a for you.Good luck.

OPPS!!! I stand corrected! My mind is older than the hills! My son's just reminded me that we had a little trouble with 2 Win 100's in 308. Some fired cartridges would jam up in the chamber. Still, I'd buy another 100, especially if it was in .284 Win.

I would go for a BAR. I use a 308 (1970 belgium) sometimes althought I'm mostly a bolt rifle guy. Just got a nice one in 270 circa 1991 for a friend who's back into hunting. He wanted a semi so I advised the BAR. The BAR is very reliable.
I believe the cheaper Remingtons do have some trouble which I experienced. When using lighter shorter bullets the 742 stopped jamming. Of course a semi must always be kept clean and free of oil or grease. Use dry lube (it comes in spray) Heard alot of the 742s jam so I never wanted to take the chance on a Remington.
I just went thru the Baron Sport catalog and find the prices are quite high now even for a BAR so I also advise to buy used. The BAR 270 I just got is like new with less than 100 rds fired. Paid 750$. A new Safary II will set you back 1260$ tax incl.
Someone said they saw bolt rifles shoot no better than semis on the range so I expect he didn't go out much. On average a bolt will shoot better than a semi and long range shooters don't go for semis (etc. american snipers but they admit canadians are better with their TAC50 which was proved) Now don't get me wrong. A semi can be made to shoot as good as some bolts but it will take lots more money to achieve that.
Let me just add this bottom line: the type of gun or caliber is not as important as knowing how to use it and trigger time can't be replaced by any fancy gizmo whether it's a special caliber, fancy scope or type of rifle.
