Is there much value in buying a 30-30 if I already own a 45-70?

Can’t disagree a .30-06 is better in every metric but one; handiness. .30-06 is a standard to judge other cartridges by, I fully agree. But a narrow framed 6 1/2lb Winchester with smooth sides and a 16-20” barrel has its place in my world. Flown with my Grandfather’s lots, his moose rifle, on account of what a lovely little package it is. Not even my sveltest bolt actions and I have a few to choose from, are as comfortable in hand or as easy to putt around the mountains with sling free.

An old ‘94 is the best kind of old friend.

I think it's no mistake, back in the late 1950s Ithaca copied this stock to receiver shape for its military survival rifle M6.

Henceforth Springfield and CZ both had/have these Winchester lever'ish profile.
Therefore, to a lesser degree the different Chiappa combination gun too. However the Chiappa M6 seeminhly put together with less quality and lack of rigor.
That's too bad but true I think.
Sorry for the stray off topic.

Only ever owned one 760 / 7600, never hunted it. I have to give that gun a chance one day as I like pumps a good deal. Just find it much “chunkier” than a 94 in hand. The chamberings are better, so it has its charm.

I like the 760s plenty, for what they are. But even the carbines do not have "great handling" - At least not compared to a 20" 1894. Not bad handling, but certainly not great.

I agree ..... A 760 does not handle as well as a 94 but the 30-06 has a lot to offer over a 30-30. Everything is a trade-off and subject to personal preferences.

This has me thinking to consider the other cartridges that come in 336/1894's like like 38-55, 35 Remington or the new 360 Buckhammer.

I'm not familiar with the 38-55, it was the predecessor to the 30-30? The ballistics isn't looking like it's a heavy hitter.

38-55 is a hobby all to itself. If you’re not a hand loader, just don’t do it. If you are a hand loader, and if you have lots of patience, the 38-55 can be a lot of fun, and it’s more than enough for deer at any practical range. Then again, so is 45-70, 30-30, 32spl, 35rem, 356win, 444marlin, etc etc.

If you already have a lever gun and you’re looking for better performance from another lever gun, consider betting something that shoots Spitzer bullets like a savage 99, Winchester 88, BLR, etc. if you just want to buy another gun (like we all do) then get what interests you.
If you already have a 45-70 and hunt inside 100ish yards, you already have what you need.
