Is this acceptable for a "custom" job?

The gunsmith has agreed to refund me the money. I will end up getting this thread deleted when I receive the money. Thanks for everyones opinion.

Good... it's kind of a thread that shouldn't be... the 'smith' should have a chance before the slaughter...

I'm with Guntech on this one. Nothing would leave my shop in that condition, but I also do everything myself and detail inspect it.
Could have been an apprentice doing the work that got overlooked.
Let's not forget that some things have slipped past some of the bigger shops on this forum and that shop never had the chance to resolve the fiasco it turned into.

Threads like these are absolutely absurd. Only one side of the story is ever heard, while everyone dog piles on based on a biased account of the circumstances. I'm certain most reputable gunsmiths would resolve this with a simple phone call. Threads like this should be as a last resort and a warning to others when a gunsmith or vendor refuse to address obvious deficiencies.

That is all well and fine, but two things...

First, the gunsmiths name, buisness, and location was never shown, only his work.

Second, no reputable gunsmith would (read; should) send out work like that.

I agree with this 150%, but why should gunsmiths be "above" public review, I'm pretty sure that if it was a car shop the name would have been in the second line of the post. The fact that this smith let work like that out of his shop is disturbing, that fact that the OP used this thread knowing that the smith would read it, just to use it as leverage to get his money back and then close it, is, in my opinion not in the usual good spirit of gun enthusiasts helping each other that I have so far experienced here.

Other smiths can chime in and say that theres always another side to the story, sure I agree, so why doesn't this smith chime up and explain what happened.

I for one, living not too far from the OP, would like to know who did this work, if that work left their shop in the first instance, I certainly would not take it back for any kind of a fix, in my opinion the OP should have demanded a full refund upon sight of the gun, and then if he felt like letting others know - posted the whole situation, not just tit bits in order to get a better deal with this crappy smith......

Just my opinion, we all work damned hard for our coin and I hate to see $1500 of work that looks like this......

I do understand what your saying and this is just sh*tty work ... However there is a saying " dont tell other people tell us " it can really screw a buisnes if you bash them when something was over looked... Maybe they f*cked it up, ment to fix it and had forgotten and someone in shipping sent it out not noticing. I recomend that the OP calls them lets them know what happend. If they try to shrugg him off ... NO HOLDS BARRED !!!

My personal policy will be:

1. Contact the person who did the work and ask for a re-do or refund depending on magnitude of error
2. If the above fails I will write a review pointing out the complete butchery done - review will be posted on CGN and names will be named and, lastly
3. Commence civil litigation for appropriate damages

I trust I won't find myself in this position.

That sounds good to me too.

Guys... if you read all of the posts ( #58 in particular) you will see this thread is done... we are just flapping our gums now...

Thats right - the only way this should have been handled, I would want to know what happened and who did it or I'm not really interested in reading about it.

This isn't the first time I've seen this level of work. I appreciate that "Tranman" came forward with this info. If you expose such a "train-wreck", it's very difficult to sell your butchered custom build in the EE after you have openly criticized the gunsmith for his poor workmanship. I would suppose, this is why some so called gunsmiths are able to get away with this quality of work. It's best to keep quite and try to resolve it with the smith or dump it in the EE with a fabricated accuracy claim. I thought I read that, in certain provinces, gunsmiths needed to be registered and licensed with the CFO.....I wonder if this guy is? I see this as a huge problem, untrained and unaccredited individuals building potentially un-safe rifles in their garage on a lathe from Princess Auto.

I'd be surprised if there's a handful of "accredited" guys doing gunsmith work for a living in Canada without another income or retired, and you can bet that probably all of them are doing it from their garage, and there's good reasons for that.

Some more gum flapping...

In Canada anyone charging for doing work on a firearm must be licensed as a gunsmith. Anyone with $100 and a PAL can apply for a gunsmithing license. No training, no skills, no expertise required. Pass the security checks and $100 is it.

But you guys are reading way too much into this thread. This has gone from a bad knob install to potentially dangerous builds..There are thousands of cobbled up firearms out there, many done by the owners themselves. It's like buying anything used...

This should be between the owner and the 'gunsmith' unless the 'gunsmith' does not deal with the problems to the satisfaction of the owner.

WELL said sir.

I really hope this shuts some people up and this thread dies once and for all!
