It is moose. At first I wondered about what kind of tree, but in the last picture it does looks like poplar.
When they eat bark like this, it is usually late winter/early spring, when small brush for browsing is geting scarce. In the pictures the bruising of the tree looks fresher than last spring. However, I don't think they ever chew bark like this in the summer, when there is so much fresh sprouts to eat.
The fact there are no tracks in the snow, and if there had been tracks in the snow, then more snow, the tracks would still be visible, even in the pictures,
I think it must have been done last spring.
